Evergreen Express
October 2019 - Issue 30
Principal's Message
Dear Evergreen Elementary Families,
We are getting so pumped for our Walk-a-Thon this Friday, October 4th from 1:30-2:45pm! This is our one and ONLY fundraiser and our goal is $35,000 this year. All of the money that we raise will go directly back to supporting our Evergreen students in the form of classroom technology, enrichment programs, and classroom supplies. Our hope is that every student will join our $100 Club and that family members will join us for the Walk-a-Thon this Friday. Please sign up to volunteer at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4ea9a92fa3fb6-2019.
We are always on the lookout for more noon duty supervisors too! We really could use more support on Mondays and Fridays. If you are interested, please check in with Mrs. Hansen or Ms. Juhola at school.
Attending school has a huge impact on student success.
We realize some absences are for health or other reasons. But, when students are absent 2 or more days a month (or 18 days over the school year) they can fall far behind in what they learn. Excused and unexcused absences both mean missing classroom learning time. Absences can add up. Missing just two days every month puts students at risk of falling behind.
Some Attendance Tips:
- Make sure your students keep a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine.
- Turn off all electronics including TVs, phones and tablets at bedtime.
- Make sure clothes and pack backpacks are ready the night before.
- Check with our school nurse or office staff if you are not sure about when to keep your child at home due to illness.
- Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.
- Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your student feel anxious about going to school.
- Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your student to school.
Please let us know how we can best support you and your student so that they can show up for school on time every day.
Warm regards,
Jen Hansen

President's Message:
My favorite thing about Evergreen is the community that exists within. In my first few years, I’ve seen many amazing things that make me wish that I had gone to this school as a child. During the day, this is a place of learning, great accomplishments and achievements; but once a month at our Family Fun Nights it becomes something completely different. It becomes a place for fun and a place that we get to meet our children’s friends and their families. It becomes that central location that connects us all and I believe it’s the thing that makes us so much more than just a school but more of a family. I believe that every time we show our kids that school can be a place for fun that we are giving them one more reason to love it. Hopefully by the time they have moved on from Evergreen, they can leave with fun, positive memories that they will keep with them for a lifetime

Calling All Artists!
Reflections is here again Bobcats. It is our annual art contest brought to you by our Evergreen PTA that encourages students to create original art and be recognized for their creations based on the year’s theme. The 2019-2020 year’s theme is “LOOK WITHIN”.
We ask students what does “Look Within” mean to you? They can enter works of art in as many times of the six categories as they choose. The six categories are: dance choreography, film productions, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts.
First, second, and third place winners are chosen in each category and for each division by professional judges to move on to district, state, and possibly national level.
PTA Reflections encourages students of all ages and abilities to:
- Unleash creative talents and be inspired
- Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
- Experience the fun and joy of making art
- Tap into critical-thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
- Receive positive recognition for their original works of art.
Entry forms will be available in the office in the month of September & October.
Please feel free to email Miriam_scott@crpusd.org if you have any questions!
Communication
Communicating effectively with families is incredibly important to our school. We will utilize several methods to communicate with families: Parent Messaging through our student information system PowerSchool, Facebook, the Evergreen Elementary website, and our Evergreen Express newsletter. Here is how to access all of that information:
Powerschool: Our IT Department will send an email during the first week of school so parents can access their student's Powerschool Account.
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CRPUSDEvergreen/ This is our public Facebook page where updates will be posted.
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/evergreen.crpusd/ This is a closed Facebook group for Evergreen families and staff only. Please request to join this group if you have not done so already.
Website: https://evs.crpusd.org/
Evergreen Express Newsletter: The Evergreen Express will be sent on a monthly basis.
Restorative Practices Family Corner
It is our goal to inspire Evergreen families to implement Restorative Practices at home. A great place to have restorative conversations is around the dinner table.
October Question of the Month: "If we could only have one holiday, which one would you pick and why?"
Good luck!
Student Meal Accounts
Food Service is encouraging families to put money on student meal accounts using My School Bucks (click link to add money to your child's account). My School Bucks is live and payments are reflected within 15 minutes of the payment being made.
Digital Citizenship
Each month, we will provide an article regarding Digital Citizenship and your elementary school student. For October, we are focusing on Cyberbullying. Here are two articles on the topic and a video.
How Do I Protect My Young Child From Cyberbullying:

How Common is Cyberbullying: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/cyberbullying/how-common-is-cyberbullying
Also, October 14th-18th is Digital Citizenship Week, so we will be doing some lessons about this topic in the computer lab.
Evergreen Donation Programs
As a parent, I love when purchases can contribute money back to Evergreen. Here are some of programs that support our school.
