Superintendent's Update
May 2017
A Huge Thank You to Our Staff!
On behalf of the CUSD Administration and the Board of Education I would like to thank all our amazing staff for the fine work and service to the students in our district. As a district we are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated and passionate staff serving our students. You care for our students from the minute they are picked up in the morning until they go home in the afternoon. You help our students learn in the classroom and assist students for their every need in every office in the district. You provide breakfast and lunch, supervise students and keep our school sites safe. You repair our buses and our buildings and keep our classrooms clean. You keep our grounds beautiful so that students and all staff can enjoy a wonderful place to learn and work each day. You take care of the paperwork that keeps our schools running and so much more! Thank you to our entire staff for all you do.
Wishing everyone a safe and relaxing summer -
we're looking forward to an incredible 2017/18 school year!

PV House of BLUE Students Win State Medals
PV House of BLUE students competed in two contest categories this year; Digital Cinema & TV/Video Production. These students had the difficult task of creating short films on location in a 30 hour start to finish time period. Also included were two exams, interviews with judges, and presenting a portfolio of work including resumes, references, and pre-production for their films. Every year, competition increases at the State Level, and this year there were almost 3000 students (a record high) from throughout the state competing in multiple contest areas. Once again, our students did an exceptional job of representing PVHS and the Chico community.
2016 State Medal Winners:
TV/Video Production-
Gold Medal: Quinn Farley & Brandon Clark
Silver Medal: Cade Ferreira & Brody McCutcheon
Bronze Medal: Garrett Havel & Tommy Angel
Additional state participants and teams who qualified from wins at the regional competition in Sacramento.
Digital Cinema-(Just missing the podium…)
5th Place: Nathan Hitchman & Melissa Roetto 925/1000 points total
8th Makaio Moss & Zach Billingsley 900/1000 points total
Quinn Farley, Brandon Clark and Instructor Michael Peck will all be attending Skills USA National’s in Louisville Kentucky on June 19 to 23rd with a chance at being one of the top three teams in the country!
All of these amazing students are a part of the current Media, Arts, & Entertainment CTE Pathway and courses at PVHS. These students are dedicated and passionate; they continue to demonstrate year after year that they are among the best in the state in their given competitive skills areas.
Kids Cook Monday at Citrus Elementary School
Thank you to everyone involved for making this event such a huge success!! It really was a collaborative effort between the amazing support of volunteers and everyone at CHC, CUSD, FoodCorps and The Kids Cook Monday team.
"The event at Citrus was funded by the Carol M. White Pep grant and put on through CUSD nutrition services, FoodCorps and the Center for Healthy Communities.
The U.S. Department of Education awarded Chico Unified a $2.1 million Carol M. White PEP grant, making CUSD one of four California districts selected for the grant. The district is using that funding to provide enhanced and structured physical education in after-school programs as well as nutrition education at McManus, Citrus, Neal Dow, Rosedale, Parkview and Chapman schools." {taken from the Chico ER article}
We were able to serve the following people:
- 15 families on the night (compared with 5 families last time)
- 63 students and families cooked and ate dinner together
- 10 volunteers, thanks to CHC and Laurie for coordinating such wonderful volunteers!

Congratulations to the CUSD Class of 2017 Retirees!
The combined teacher, counselor and administrator retirees served a total of 1,057 years in CUSD, with individuals ranging between 12 and 35 years of service to our students and community. Marsh Junior High School Home Economics Teacher Sue Campbell and Pleasant Valley High School Math Teacher Jeff Hemmingsen tied for the most years in the District at 35 each. Another fun fact: four of the members of the Retiring Class of 2017 also graduated together from Chico High School: Mike Christopher, Meredith Christopher, Glenn Pulliam, and Jeaner Kassel.
On behalf of the Board of Education, Chico Unified, and our entire Chico community, thank you to this amazing group. There is no greater calling and no greater responsibility than that of an educator. This group has not only provided strong academic instruction to our students, but they have also provided guidance, support, friendship, love and family to our Chico education community.
