Counselor's Corner
Dear HPE families,
We are starting our last Second Step schoolwide theme this month: problem solving. On weekly announcements and in classroom lessons, we’ll be reminding students to use the Second Step Problem-Solving Steps:
- S: Say the problem
- T: Think of solutions
- E: Explore consequences
- P: Pick the best solution
As you can see, the first letter of each step spells the word ”step.” Remembering “step” helps students solve problems with each other in safe and respectful ways.
Second Step lessons specifically teach students to use each step and reinforce the message that solutions need to be safe and respectful. You will be receiving Home Links about the steps that describe why solving problems is important and including fun activities to do with your child to help him or her learn and practice the steps. We hope the steps will be helpful for you and your child when there are problems at home.
Please tell your child’s teacher if you would like more suggestions about how to use the Problem-Solving Steps at home.
Have a great weekend!

Honor and Excellence Award
Honor and Excellence are two of the terms that appear on the Hamilton Southeastern Crest. One might attribute these qualities to our students, and rightly so, but the same terms can also describe our staff. We honor representatives of our outstanding teachers at the end of each year through the Teacher of the Year program. We would also like to recognize representatives from our SUPPORT STAFF who demonstrate excellence in their work, particularly in a school year like no other!
We are looking for support staff employees who go beyond the normal expectations of their job description resulting in outstanding support of Hamilton Southeastern students and the Hamilton Southeastern Community.
Nominees must be Hamilton Southeastern employees or contracted employees working in our buildings. They could be from any support staff category, including custodial services, transportation, food service, technology, grounds, secretarial, instructional assistants, maintenance, accounting, treasurers, school resource officers, nurses, therapists, probation officers, etc. Qualifications to be nominated would include anything beyond the normal expectations of the person’s job. It could be a “one-time” act or a series of acts.
Nominations may be received from any person from the Hamilton Southeastern Community, including: professional staff, support staff, parents, students, community members, etc.If you would like to nominate someone for this award, please complete the form on or before March 23 at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/85CF3HB
HPE Student Council News
During the month of March, HPE Student Council will be collecting pennies and other coins to donate to Redemption Pet Rescue (https://redemptionrescueinc.com/). Students can bring in pennies (and other coins) starting Monday, March 8th and ending Thursday, April 1st. If your child chooses to support this cause, please send coins in a baggie with your child's teacher's name on the baggie. To kick off our fundraiser we will be having theme days next week!

CDC Recommendations for spring travel outside the U.S.
As plans are being made for spring travel, we wanted to share the following information. If you plan to travel outside the United States, the CDC offers recommendations for a safe return to the U.S. and school:
- Get tested 3-5 days after travel AND stay home and self-quarantine for 7 days after travel.
- Even if you test negative, stay home and self-quarantine for the full 7 days.
- If your test is positive, isolate yourself to protect others from getting infected. (10 days isolation from start of symptoms or test date, whichever occurs first)
- If you don’t get tested, it’s safest to stay home and self-quarantine for 10 days after travel.
- Avoid being around people who are at increased risk for severe illness for 14 days, whether you get tested or not.

HPE Library Curbside
Do you need more books to read and enjoy at home? Virtual learners can use HSE Curbside service to borrow books from the library.
All students will be able to place up to 4 books on hold weekly. Our new pick up hours are going to be Monday- Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
There will be a book cart in the front vestibule. The curbside pick up book cart is organized alphabetically by last name. All book stacks will have a name tag to help you easily locate your books.
You can just walk in, grab your book stack, and go. No need to sign in or check in with the office. There will also be a book bin for you to return materials as you finish with them.
Books will be ready for pick up the day after you place your holds. So if you place your holds on Monday, they will be ready for pick up by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Books will have a two week loan period.

Vision Screenings for 3rd Graders
Vision screening is required by the Indiana State Board of Health for all 3rd grade students. All third graders will be screened on Monday, March 15th. Near and far vision will be screened with the results being pass or fail. This is only a screening to determine if further evaluation is needed. Parents will be notified only if your student does not pass the screening. If your child wears glasses, please make sure they have them at school the day of the screening for accurate results.
If you decline to have your student screened, please notify the school nurse, Jenny Leonard, via email jleonard@hse.k12.in.us by Friday, March 12th.
Virtual 1st and 3rd grade students will be screened on a later date, to be determined.
