3rd and 4th Grade
Week of Feb. 13-17
Happy Valentine's Day on Tuesday
Yes this Tuesday is Valentine's Day. We will not be having a class party but we will allow time before the school day ends to give students time to pass out their sweet notes and treats. The Student Council has been selling 'candy-grams' at either $1.00 or $0.50. We ask that you support them and have your child purchase candy-grams. It will be sold even as late as Monday - on the premise that they will be delivered on Tuesday.
EARLY Dismissal - Friday, February 17
Students will be dismissed early this Friday, February 17. Extended care is available for that day.
PRESIDENT'S DAY - Monday, February 20
NO CLASSES to honor all our Presidents.
Religion
4th Grade will be hosting the School Mass on Thursday, February 23
3rd Grade will host the School Mass on Thursday, March 2. This is the day after Ash Wednesday which begins the season of Lent.
As part of our Lenten Penance we will be having Silent lunches and it will start on Ash Wednesday and continue for every Wednesday & Friday during Lent. Only the meal time will be silent but as soon as we go out for Recess they can have their conversation.
Math
We are really digging our heels in on decimals. The children are adding and subtracting decimals. Just remind them to align those decimal points and add and subtract as usual. From here we will go right into Angles and Lines. But every once in a while I will bring up some old fractions or decimals or even area and perimeter problems to ensure that they have not forgotten how to solve those problems.
I cannot emphasize it more; BUT the accuracy and speed of computation has to greatly improve. Please continue to practice with those addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division flash cards.
Social Studies
We continue learning more and more about our wonderful state of Washington. We are on Week 16 and we have a goal of 28 weeks.
Language Arts
3rd Grade has started their new paperback novel Island of the Blue Dolphins. So far the students have learned that the story is based on facts about the Lone woman on San Nicolas island. It really makes me happy when I see how the children get so involved in the stories. I would be even more pleased should they continue reading even after leaving me. Maybe parents can ask their child to read to them.
4th Grade is finishing off From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. The story of two children running away and hiding in a museum seems like fun. But they see how very upset and worried the parents were, and surviving can be difficult. If you can sign up the children to use the public library it could encourage them to continue reading and keeping it as a wonderful hobby. This may be the summer activity.
Thank you parents for supporting your children.
SOON!
