Our Mission

To enhance and protect the quality of the Yahara River headwaters while educating the community and providing sustainable recreational opportunities.

River Blockage Removal

In 2015 we ramped up our river blockage scouting and removal program. Volunteers scouted the river for blockages, which is such a fun way to volunteer with the Friends! The river is divided in to segments and each volunteer kayaked a segment to note blockage locations. Kayaks were provided by the Friends and the Village of DeForest and rideshare assistance was coordinated by Shaun Shirley, the Friends vice-president.

Blockages were tackled by volunteers throughout the season and at our Annual River Clean-up. Larger blockages were reported to the Village of DeForest who contracted out their removal a few times throughout the year. It was a great partnership and a fun volunteer opportunity. We're looking forward to continuing this program next season!

If you'd like to learn more about this project or volunteer to help scout for blockages (aka kayak the river), please email us.

Upcoming Events

Although it feels like winter has just started, we are already planning for spring! Our first fishing clinic has been scheduled for Saturday, May 14 at 9 AM at Sunfish Pond. Mark your calendar and watch for the Village of DeForest's recreation guide to come out in a few weeks with registration information.

Would you like to volunteer with us at this event? We're always looking for more help!
