SYSA Weekly Newsletter January 16, 2022

Hello SYSA families,

What a great end to Session 1! Thanks to all our parents for working with us through the last few weeks when we had so many game changes. The league is very appreciative that Shaker is so flexible and exhibits such good sportsmanship. We have a reputation among our competitors for being fierce but fair and always good sports. THANK YOU!

A few reminders: We DO have training on Monday, January 17th even though the kids are out of school that day.

Session 2 games start the weekend of January 22/23 and Team managers will be entering them into Sports Engine soon. You can always find them here if you want to confirm.

We ask that families RSVP on Sports Engine as soon as they know their availability for games so we can reach out for subs if necessary.

Have a great week!

Highlights in this week’s newsletter:

  • Winter Indoor Session 2 Practice schedule

  • OHTSL- Fall Division Champion Team Highlight

  • SYSA Team Contest- Watch more soccer!

  • Referee training Opportunities

  • COVID Guidelines

  • January Birthdays

  • Spiritwear and Uniforms

All team practices are at the same time as session 1. Please look for your Coach when you arrive as you may not be practicing on the same part of the field as before.

Also, we made a few changes to the age group practices: the BU11-12 age group practice is now on THURSDAYS at 5:00 PM at FORCE RICHMOND so we could offer more space to the group for practice. The BU13-15 age group is back to 6:00 PM on Wednesdays. If you have questions about practice schedule, please reach out to Coach Yasser.

Each week we're going to highlight one of our OHTSL Fall Division Champions!

BU14 (2008)

For the second season in a row, the 2008 (BU14) Team won their division with a record of 7-0-1 this past fall. They will now move up to the highest Division in their age bracket this spring! Please congratulate the following players and Coaches when you see them! Jack DCruz, Sebastien Glinzler, Oliver Mankowski, James Moose, Luke Murray, Sebastian Perez, Joe Pernsteiner, Leo Pevnick, Oleksandr Rabochii, and Isaac Ravas! Head Coach Yasser Hussein and Assistant Coach Greg Ravas.

Watch More Soccer Contest

There are so many opportunities to watch soccer over the next few weeks-- we really hope our players take advantage as our Coaches believe it will pay great dividends down the road!

Be sure to send in photos of your player watching soccer to: to be entered in our year-long contest! The team that “watches" the most soccer will win a trip to Mitchell’s Ice Cream.

Referee Training Opportunities

We Need Your Help!!

As many of you are well aware, since the pandemic began, trained referees are in short supply. We're hoping some of our members will get trained and help out with our Recreation games and eventually move on to Travel games.

If you're interested and would like more information please fill out this google form.

The new referee certification process involves just five steps..

  1. Create a personal profile in the U.S. Soccer Learning Center.
  2. In the Learning Center, register for a New Grassroots Referee Course, based on your availability.
  3. Complete the Introduction to Safe and Healthy Playing Environments training, housed in the Learning Center.
  4. Complete a self-paced Grassroots Referee Module, also housed in the U.S. Soccer Learning Center.
  5. Attend the virtual Field Training Session with a local referee instructor. (There are classes in January, February and March but they fill early!)

Once you have completed steps 1 through 5, you will be a certified Grassroots Referee and ready to officiate games.

COVID Guideines

As noted in our last newsletter we've altered our COVID guidelines in response to the uptick in cases. We are now mandating masks be worn by all SYSA players at all times during practices. Players are encouraged to wear masks during games and coaches will be reminding players not to congregate before and after practice and while sitting on the bench.

Additionally, we've amended our COVID notification and Return to Play policies to be in alignment with the latest CDC guidance. You can find them here.
