Internet Safety
In this day and age kids are always plugged in on their devices. With that being said electronics can be wonderful for connecting with loved ones, playing games, doing schoolwork, shopping, etc., but can also expose us to dangers like identity theft, bullying, explicit content, predators, and more. If adults can fall into the black holes of the internet then so can kids and that’s why it’s important to practice safety around it. Many parents struggle to enforce rules around the internet so it’s important to create awareness for yourself. Some of the tips that I would suggest to practice include to:
- Educate yourself on the possible content that your kids are accessing
- Teach yourself how to use all the devices your kids are using
- Create a family agreement around device and internet use- this can include the duration of use, websites being accessed, and passwords that are set.
- Use devices in open settings to prevent accessing dangerous sites
Remember you are the parent and it is okay to have boundaries and rules around internet use. There are many dangers that children can be exposed to and it’s our job to ensure their safety. Understanding this as a parent can be detrimental. On the flip side, we want to teach our kids how to make the right choice in terms of cyber safety as well! Try educating your child on the possible dangers and how to combat those risks can be helpful. Have open conversations about your boundaries and the risks so your child is not in the dark and confused. Teach them that sharing personal information can put them at risk, talk about the concerns of talking to strangers online, and talk about safety plans that you can create if they ever run into these issues! I have included a link to the top 10 programs for parental controls for the internet and encourage you to research to ensure that your child has safe, enjoyable experiences online.
