Serviceberry Tree Sent Home Today
News from Ms. Hess
In literacy this week, we read the challenging poem The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus, making connections, asking questions, and identifying challenging vocabulary. We also continued curating a personal collection of poetry in our writer's notebook for seed ideas.
In writing, we wrote a collective diamante poem with a resident at Colonial Manor, wrote our Blackout Poems, and an abstract noun poem.
In math, we continued to work on classifying polygons by sides and angles including triangles and quadrilaterals, and we started to calculate volume in cubic units.
In science, we constructed models of a black box with foam and a marble to see if we could make it match another black box that we couldn't look inside. It nearly drove them crazy not to be able to reveal what was inside. This was to simulate the work scientists do when they must use models to explain things they cannot concretely experience.
We also met with our first-grade buddies this week to share our poetry, listen to them read, and play together outside. It was such an amazing experience to watch our fifth grade take a leadership role! Ask your child about his/her buddy!
IXL Practice for Math: EE11 and PRODIGY GAME!
Learning Goals This Week:
Math: I can classify polygons including triangles and quadrilaterals & calculate volume in square units.
Writing: I can create Blackout Poems and title them with an appropriate theme driven title. I can create a partner diamante poem and an abstract noun poem using similes.
Science: I can work collaboratively with my peers to problem solve and use materials safely.
