Way To Go! Woodland Students Came in Third Place in the Unless Contest!
Woodland and Arrowhead students who are in Mrs. Johnson's Challenge classroom came in third place for the Unless Contest! Here is a link from the Philly Zoo which describes the Unless Project: https://philadelphiazoo.org/unless-contest/
The third- and fourth-grade Challenge students at Arrowhead and Woodland (Team Tamarin) become stewards for the environment through their participation in the UNLESS Contest sponsored by the Philadelphia Zoo and we are thrilled to be a Finalist. During our year-long unit, the students learned about how our actions impact Global Warming and the effect on animals like the Golden Lion Tamarin. Some of their initiatives and successes:
-Aramark agreed to stop the use of styrofoam trays (at least 150 a week), single-use condiment packets, and move away from plastic straws for paper straws in Methacton.
-Lights Out! contest at Woodland saved 266 hours of electricity in the month of February.
-Arrowhead was preparing to implement an increased recycling program in the cafeteria.
-Shake/Fold Method (TED Talk) to reduce the number of paper towels used taught to all students in both buildings. Logo created and placed on paper towel dispensers as a reminder to staff and students.
-Letter writing campaign to local restaurants to end the use of plastic straws and automatic water glasses.

Important Information from Mrs. Ehmer Below!
The elementary counselors encourage families to hold family meetings which would be much like classroom meetings that most children are accustom to. This is a great opportunity for family members to air concerns, offer compliments and bond with one another. See below document for details and strategies.
