Check Out What's Coming Up This Week...
This week is week 2 of our reading rotation! Students will continue to work with Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Fox, and myself on a daily basis. The comprehension strategy we will be focusing on this week is Sequencing Events in a Text. Students with Mrs. Thomas will be working on reading fluency through the RAZ Kids program as well as using mentor texts to practice sequencing events. Students with Mrs. Fox will be working on skill-based comprehension activities focusing on sequencing events. Students with me will be finishing their guided reading books this week, as well as completing our 2nd week of word study. There will be a test on the guided reading books on Friday, September 21st. Imagine Learning Sign In Information will be going home with the students in my reading group on Monday! Students work with this program 3-5 times per week at school, but can access this program at home to practice essential reading skills!
The week we will continue our unit on Decimal Place Value! This week we will be focusing on how to represent decimals with models, as well as in standard, word, and expanded form. By mid-week, we will be working on comparing and ordering decimals. There will be a quiz covering all of the decimal concepts we have learned so far on Friday, September 21st. The unit test for decimals is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 27th.
This week is Week 2 of our spelling rotation. The second homework activity from the spelling choice board is due on Friday, September 21st. The spelling test will be on Wednesday, September 19th.
We have begun our first Science unit on Ecosystems! This week, students will learn all about plant and animal adaptations, and how human actions can either positively or negatively impact the environment. Students will begin an in-class Ecosystems project on Friday where they will be asked to create a new species of animal, explain its habitat, niche, behavioral and structural adaptations, as well as the animals impact on the environment. The Ecosystems Unit Test is tentatively scheduled for Friday, September 28th.
This week we will be focusing on Science.
This week we will be studying narrative writing with a focus on using adjectives! Last week, students practiced using adjectives to describe a mystery item to their classmates. This week, we will use the mentor text "In November," by Cynthia Rylant as a guide to descriptive writing. After analyzing the elements of narrative writing and the use of adjectives in this text, students will write their own descriptive essays about an event of their choosing that happens in the Fall.
