5th Grade at Bear Creek Elementary
Week 4 - September 28th - October 2nd
Dear Families,
We are fortunate to be able to work with the wonderful people at Hello World. As of right now, they are planning to meet with Mr. Linnell's class on Mondays from 12:15-1:15 pm. This hour-long block will be cut in two sessions: 12:15-12:45 and 12:45-1:15. Ms. Harmon's homeroom will meet with Hello World on Wednesdays at the same time. We will let the students know which group to join. The link to the Hello World Zoom meeting is here: tinyurl.com/HWzoomtwo and will also be on our 5th grade website. The Hello World engineers will also be available during office hours (2:00-3:00pm) on Mondays (using the same zoom link). To hear more about Hello World, see Mr. Crissey's email.
Sincerely,
Ms. Harmon and Mr. Linnell
What we're doing in class this week...
Week of Sept. 28th
ELAR: This week, we will continue to learn many different strategies while we read. In order to fully apply these strategies and skills taught, it is important that students are reading independently for 25 minutes a day and reflecting in the discussion boards in Blend. There are many great online reading resources linked under “may do” in our Reading Blend page!
We are starting our first novel study the week of October 5th. We will be starting with The Green Book by Jill Paton Walsh. It is imperative that all students have this book so they can complete the assignments. Please contact me as soon as possible if you are not able to purchase the book at this time. As a reminder, the three books needed for this year are linked below:
1. Sophia’s War: A Tale of the Revolution by Avi
2. The Green Book by Jill Paton Walsh
3. Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse

Social Studies: This week, we will be discussing symbols of the United States, where students will be tasked on researching a symbol. On Wednesday during Social Studies time (12:15-1:15), Hello World will be with Ms. Harmon’s homeroom. For more information, please make sure you checked out the email from Mr. Crissey sent yesterday (Sunday, Sept. 27).
