Letter from the Board

Fall is my favorite time of year. Time to enjoy horseback riding, hiking, and camping with family and friends. I like the cool mornings and the sunny afternoons. I also look forward to reading a good book as daylight gets shorter. “The Emigrants” by Vilhelm Moberg is my current book. This has been on my list to read for a while and since the remake of the 1970 movie is coming out in Sweden on December 25 of this year, what better time to read it. I’m near the beginning of the book, so Karl Oskar and Kristina are still in Småland, Sweden. They are starting to have a difficult time farming and not making enough money to cover the debt compared to the debt owed. Their family is getting bigger and there is fear that they won’t be able to provide for them. Like many Swedes during the mid to late 1800’s, they are considering going to America as a solution. I’m listening to the book and hearing the Swedish words spoken warms my heart. It reminds me of my Grandpa Sellman (Min Far Far) and his Småland dialect that he spoke from time to time. Both sets of his grandparents came from Småland and settled between Center City and Almelund around 1880 for similar reasons as Karl Oskar and Kristina. This story is akin to what my ancestors went through. I’m so glad I decided to read it. If you are interested, there is a Community Book Club that’s getting together each month this fall to discuss the 4-book series by Vilhelm Moberg at the Chamber Building. I’m sure there will be more visits to Chisago Lakes from Swedes next year after the new movie comes out. This will be great for our area’s tourism!

The Chamber is gearing up for Fall Decorating. You’ll see a group of us beautifying our Chisago Lakes area with fall décor on October 1. Trick or Treat on Main Street is planned for Friday, October 29th from 4:00 - 6:00pm. There are two ways to participate: You can have trick or treaters come to your business for treats. Or, you can bring goodies to the Chamber and we will include it in a bag here for trick or treaters. For more details if you are interested in participating, contact the Chamber by October 15. Also, remember to attend our Chamber luncheons that are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Check out our weekly email for up-to-date information including fun, fall things to do in Chisago Lakes. As always, don’t hesitate to contact the Chamber Office at 651-257-1177.

Minnesota Department Of Employment & Economic Development

DEED has published a resource on their website to help partners and businesses with navigating available funding opportunities. In addition to the funds appropriated from the 2021 Minnesota Legislative Session, there are also a large number of programs stemming from the American Rescue Plan to help support and grow our businesses and economy. This is great news, but we also can understand how it can be overwhelming. In case it’s helpful, here is a guide that shares an overview of available opportunities all in one place.
