Hello, From Mrs. Wilson!
Hello CCS Families!
It has been another great two weeks here at CCS! We've had a book fair, have been finishing up fall sports seasons and preparing for winter sports, studied hard with new programs, enjoyed time in our outdoor classroom, read stories, worked on new math skills, strengthened our community, and so much more! This newsletter is just a few highlights of all that we've been up to!
In Kindness,
Mrs. Wilson
October 17-21 is National School Bus Safety Week.
We are so lucky to have H.A. Marston Transportation take such excellent care of our bus riders here at CCS!
Trail Work, Saturday, October 22, 2022. Volunteers Needed!
Are you looking to volunteer to help finish some trail and bridge work out back in the outdoor classroom? If so, you're in luck!
The group will me meeting here at CCS, Saturday, October 22nd from 8am-12pm. If you'd like more information before tomorrow morning, please email project coordinator, Zack Boyajian for further details. No experience needed- just hard work and a smile!
Jameson and Mrs. Johnson
Has your child come home and told you about our Thursday visitor? Jameson, the Beagle, is a certified therapy dog handled (and loved) by Mrs. Karen Johnson, our SEL Interventionist here at CCS! Jamison visits classrooms, the lunch room, sits with students in 1:1 sessions and small groups, and supports students and staff when needed.
Staff Professional Development work with Erin Moore
Educational Consultant Erin Moore spent the day at CCS on Friday October 7th, meeting with individual teams, as they continue to work towards their professional development goals. Erin had previously been in to work with the whole staff at the beginning of the school year, and more recently, spent a day in the building observing classrooms and gathering input from teachers so she could tailor her workshops to what individual teams feel they need.
Topics on Friday included:
Understanding Intrinsic Motivators and Embedding Choice Throughout the Day
Review of SEL (social-emotional learning) happening throughout the day
Understanding Trauma and the Brain
Intrinsic Motivators and Engagement
Building Relationships and Problem-Solving Conferences
Erin brings a wealth of knowledge, including professional and personal experiences, to share with Chichester staff.

Curriculum Committee Highlight: English Language Arts
Hello everyone! This year the ELA committee is made up of the following members; Corinne Rowe, kindergarten teacher; Carrie White, first grade teacher; Kate Tieman-Mara, second grade teacher; Resa Audet, reading specialist; Mollie Morissette, fourth grade teacher; Ashley Slauter, fourth grade teacher; Anna Benevides, librarian; Jane Heely, special education teacher; Sarah Downer, speech and language teacher; Kim Green, special education teacher; and Cammy Guest, middle school English teacher.
The focus of the ELA Committee is to create a cohesive language throughout the building. We look at trends throughout the building based on data gained from benchmark assessments and teacher observations. When looking at the data we try to find areas of strengths deficit, so we can better understand our learners and support them with their language, reading and writing growth. We also look at the complexity of skills and how to instill a love of reading in children.
Below you will find a link to family friendly reading information and tips.

Happy Reading!

Fundations!
In Kindergarten and Grade 1 we have begun using Fundations. Fundations is a multisensory structured language program. Fundations makes learning to read fun while laying the groundwork for life-long literacy. Students in grades K and 1 receive a systematic program in critical foundational skills, emphasizing:
Phonemic awareness
Phonics/ word study
High frequency word study
Reading fluency
Vocabulary
Comprehension strategies
Handwriting
Spelling
In First Grade students began the year reviewing lowercase letters sounds and letter formation. Letter formation was done in conjunction with our Handwriting Without Tears program. Students have learned to tap out words on their fingertips, by tapping one sound, thumb to finger, and ending with a slide as the word is said. Students have also learned trick words, which are sight words and do not always follow the conventional English language rules.
Each day students are practicing these skills and they are using multiple ways to engage in their own learning.
Scholastic Book Fair Recap
Dear Parents and Families,
I’m sending my sincere gratitude for making our Book Fair an outstanding success!
Thanks to your contributions, we sold hundreds of books! We raised over $5000 for our
school, which we’ll use to build classroom libraries and help the school library with some
new cozy seating and much wanted books.
My reward for hosting a Book Fair is watching your kids discover new books. All that joy
wouldn’t be possible without volunteers from our PTO – you deserve my special thanks.
If your child missed out on the Fair (or already finished every new book), there’s still
time to shop! Our Book Fair will continue online through 10/24/22. Your online
purchases benefit our school. Click below to shop our Fair:

I hope to see you and your child at our next Fair. Until then, happy reading!
Gratefully,
Mrs. Benevides

Dictionary Project
The Chichester Grange came to CCS with a very special gift. They presented dictionaries to each of the 3rd graders as part of The NH Dictionary Project. The goal of this project is to help all students become good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners. Thank you to the Chichester Grange for making this possible!

Weeknight Recipe Share
Mrs. Wilson has been adding this section into our staff Monday Memo, and our communications committee has asked a similar section to be placed into our bi-weekly school newsletter. We all know that getting meals on the table during the school week is hectic enough, so our hope is that by giving you some inspiration, that will help! Feel free to send us some ideas of your own to highlight!
