Alward Action

November 2, 2018

Note from Mrs. McClure

Good Afternoon Alward Families! I cannot believe that we are already into November!! The month of October flew by and what a great month it was! From a successful Walk-a-thon to the Turkey Trot, Camp-Read-A-Lot Family Literacy Night to the Scholastic Book Fair, and finally, some Halloween fun to cap it off! It was definitely a busy month, but we enjoyed every moment!

Today, our school had a special assembly to recognize our October Student Champions and kick-off our November Student Champion theme with Maranda from Wood TV8! There will be special segment coming out in the next week or so about today's assembly and our mission to be champions everyday. We will keep you posted with more information as it gets relayed to us.

We are so proud of all of our students for their efforts in taking ownership of their actions to be positive at school and out in the community. This month, we will continue to be Positive Champions, but also strive to be "Helpful" citizens. Students met in their Alward Teams today to talk about how they can be helpful at school, home, and/or out in the community. They then made a personal goal to meet by the end of the November. We are excited to hear about how our students are helping out this month!

Finally, we are looking forward to meeting with all of you next week at Parent-Teacher Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday! If you have not signed up for a conference yet, please see the link below. We are excited to team with you to help your child be successful this year at Alward!

Happy November!

Melanie McClure

How we can HELPFUL Champions in November!

1. BRING IN BOXED, BAGGED OR CANNED FOOD! GOAL = 1500 ITEMS

PE CARES FOOD DRIVE - We will be collecting canned and boxed or bagged foods to give to the Holton Community Center. The top 2 teams bringing in the most food will be able to have a pizza party and bowling at Hudsonville Lanes. We will collect food items from November 5-19. Let's help our community!

2. BRING IN NEW OR GENTLY USED (CLEAN) WINTER COATS, BOOTS, GLOVES AND SNOWPANTS. GOAL = 300 ITEMS

Winter is coming! We will be collecting new or gently used (clean) winter coats boots, gloves and snowpants. As a school, we would like to collect at least 300 items to give to kids in need in Holton, MI. We will collect cold weather clothing items from November 5-19. Let's help our neighbors!

PLEASE VOTE!

On November 6, voters in each of the public school districts in Ottawa County will be asked to consider an enhancement millage proposal of 0.9 mill for 10 years. Please see the attached flier below for all the details on how important this is for our district!

Count on Me-Alward Students and Staff Making a Difference

This year, our students and staff are working on taking initiative to make a difference in the lives of others. If you hear about how an Alward student, teacher, or staff member made a difference in someone else's life, please fill out the Google Form below. We will be posting these "Count on Me" sightings on our new bulletin boards right outside the main office. Students, parents and staff members can recognize others for things as simple as someone always saying hello to them or holding the door for them. We can also recognize others for going as far as helping out in the community. We want to know how our students and staff are making a difference at Alward and out in the community and celebrate these acts of kindness this year! Thank you for taking the time to support this "Count on Me" initiative this school year!

Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run is an after school program which inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Our ten-week program is designed for girls in grades 3-5. Lessons are led by trained volunteer coaches who guide and mentor the girls through an uplifting curriculum that focuses on life-long skills to improve emotional and physical health. The program culminates in a non-competitive 5k which gives the girls a chance to shine and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment.

The Program starts mid March and runs for 10 weeks. Girls meet after school at Alward. Please see the attached flier for all the details!
