Grand Valley State University TRIO Talent Search for INCOMING 6th grade students for the 2023-2024 School Year!
Parents and Guardians of Current 5th Grade Students Entering 6th grade:
The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals with varying needs. TRIO includes many different programs targeted to serve and assist student access and successful completion at a post-secondary institution. Students in TRIO programs can progress through the academic pipeline starting in middle school to post-baccalaureate programs. TRIO students include those that are first in their families to go to college, have a limited income, or have a disability. These programs are funded by the US Department of Education. GVSU TRIO staff serve approximately 2,400 first-generation and/or low-income participants.
Educational Talent Search (ETS), a part of Grand Valley State University's College of Education and Community Innovation, identifies and assists underrepresented individuals who have the potential to succeed in higher education. Educational Talent Search provides academic and career counseling; tutoring and financial literacy referrals; and encourages participants to graduate from high school and continue on to a post-secondary institution of their choice. Educational Talent Search also serves adults interested in returning to school by encouraging them to reenter the education system and complete a post-secondary degree. The ultimate goal of ETS is to increase the representation of youths from underrepresented backgrounds in post-secondary educational institutions around the United States. ETS serves citizens between the ages of 11-27 that have finished the 5th grade. ETS is funded to serve 719 participants.
You are INVITED to have your student apply for the Educational Talent Search program. Workshops begin in 6th grade.

PREMIER ATHLETIC & TENNIS CLUB SUMMER TENNIS PROGRAM
Summer Opportunities Provided by the Literacy Center of West Michigan
Please take a moment to review the Family Literacy Program’s summer programming. Classes (even with childcare) are a challenge for families during the summer, but the Literacy Center wanted to find ways for families to connect and also have opportunities to work on their English conversational skills. With that in mind, their team put together a series of events this summer for whole families. The Literacy Center also sought out community partners to bring as many opportunities as they could for families.
During July, they are hosting park events with different themes. They also have opportunities for families to go the Children’s Museum and Meijer Gardens. All events are FREE, but some do require pre-registration. They will have multiple Spanish speakers onsite for multilingual families at each event.

2023-2024 SCHOOLS OF CHOICE APPLICATIONS
Godwin Heights Public Schools is participating in the Kent County Schools of Choice Program for the 2023-2024 school year and can accept up to 400 applications for new Schools of Choice students in grades K-12.
Applications for students living outside the Godwin Heights School District and entering grades kindergarten through 12th grade will be accepted for buildings and grades where space is available. The application period begins April 10, 2023. Kent County SOC Application Kent Count SOC Application IMPORTANT INFORMATION Godwin Heights Public Schools participates in the Kent Intermediate School District Schools of Choice program. All students living within the Kent Intermediate School District may apply for enrollment in any Kent ISD school that has available openings during the S.O.C. enrollment window. FAMILIES, PLEASE NOTE The Kent ISD School of Choice plan is a lottery-oriented system, not a first-come, first-served one. Applications are accepted starting April 10, 2023. Only one application per student may be submitted. Families who submit more than one may be disqualified from the entire process. There is no advantage to submitting an application early since all applications are considered at the end of the application period. If the district has more applications than openings, a random drawing will take place the first week in June.
Attendance Policy
The normal attendance expectations for any given child in the Kent County Intermediate School District are as follows:
> that a child miss not more than 10 days of Excused Absences for the entire school year,
> that a child have no Unexcused Absences for the entire school year
> that a child have not more than 5 Tardies combined with Leave Early check-outs per semester.
> that a child have no Suspensions for the entire school year.
Godwin Heights Public Schools are held by law to report tardies and absences in excess of the guidelines listed above to the Kent Intermediate School District Office of Truancy and School Attendance-State Law Enforcement Division.
The primary rationale for positive attendance is the strong relationship between student attendance and student achievement. Chronic student absences reduces even the best teacher's ability to provide learning opportunities. Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. This relationship between attendance and achievement may appear early in a child's school career. A recent study looking at young children found that absenteeism in kindergarten was associated with negative first grade outcomes such as greater absenteeism in subsequent years and lower achievement in reading, math, and general knowledge.
Poor attendance has serious implications for later outcomes. High school dropouts have been found to exhibit a history of negative behaviors, including high levels of absenteeism throughout their childhood, at higher rates than high school graduates. These differences in absentee rates were observed as early as kindergarten, and students who eventually dropped out of high school missed significantly more days of school in elementary school than their peers who graduated from high school.
