Coaching 4 Ps
Review, Preview, Praise and Problems: Jan. 4-8
Progress
- Met with second grade teacher to plan next week's John Collins writing schedule and focus.
- Created first installment of a monthly literacy newsletter for teachers.
- Attended 2nd & 3rd grades' grade-level meetings. We discussed new RIT groups and PBL.
- Lead literacy committee meeting Wednesday afternoon. We discussed the reading celebration on Jan. 15th, the literacy day on Feb. 12 (planned out logistics), and literacy concerns (John Collins, mid-year assessments)
- Checked in with fifth grade ELA teacher on new class schedule to set up routines for John Collins writings and journals. She says this first week with the schedule has gone well. Appears that more writing has happened this week.
- Attended the district reading coaches' meeting on Thursday. Topics of discussion were the district's mid-year assessments and Fountas & Pinnell's Continuum of Literacy Learning.
- Worked on John Collins Poetry journal lesson in kindergarten class.
- Created a Chapter Book Challenge for above-grade level second grade readers. Shared with the teachers, and met with the participating students. Shared pointers with teachers when working with these students.
- Co-taught a point-of-view lesson in a third grade classroom for RIT band instruction.
- Reviewed a Fountas & Pinnell Continuum of Literacy Learning checklist that a Special Ed. teacher wanted to use. Her goal was to make sure it followed the Continuum. We discussed it and I gave her an extra copy of the Continuum that I had so that she could take her instruction a step further.
- Created a mid-year assessment reminder document and emailed it to teachers.
- Met with Reading Coaches from Tamassee and Walhalla Elementary and requested kindergarten and first grade John Collins journal samples and Type 3 samples.
Plan
1. Meet daily with 2nd grade class to model John Collins weekly schedule and lessons. Work on journals (poetry, reading, math) and Snowmen at Night Types 1, 2, and 3 pieces.
2. Continue to observe 2nd & 3rd grade RIT groups.
3. Meet Monday with remaining two 2nd grade chapter book challenge groups.
4. Attend grade-level meetings to continue PBL discussions.
5. Meet with first grade to discuss John Collins concerns.
6. Attend State Coaches' Cohort meeting on Thursday.
7. Create a 2nd & 3rd grade skills checklist from NWEA Learning Continuum for reading interventionists to use with LLI groups.
8. Check in with 5th grade teacher on week two of her new writing schedule.
Monday night: Cheer on the Clemson Tigers! We're all in at our house!
Praise
1. I worked with a kindergarten class on a poetry journal lesson on Friday and W.O.W! I had an awesome time with that group! Big change from working with fifth graders!! :)
2. The third grade co-teaching lesson was so spontaneous. I loved it and it was 100% engaging for the students (not to mention me)!
Potential Speed Bumps (not really problems)
2. I want to be able to facilitate the PBL discussions more in the grade-level meetings. Last week the focus was on MAP, but should've been on PBL...though we were working on immediate concerns for the teachers.
3. I need to make sure that I don't get so caught up in activities on the k-3 campus that I don't carve out time for the 4-5 campus. I WILL be there next week (not just checking in)!
