Elmonica Newsletter - Boletín

October 2, 2020

Elmonica Families,

These are certainly very difficult times continuing the education of all our children. I certainly understand as my three children are also challenged with attending school from home, too. It requires parenting support unlike we have ever experienced. In the article below, you will find some ideas that might help you to manage the stress of children learning remotely from home.

Creative Ways to Manage the Stress of Homeschooling During COVID-19 For parents, helping their children with remote learning has been one of the most challenging aspects of the pandemic. These tips can help!

Wednesday Schedule Update

For your planning purposes, the following Wednesdays also will be traditional synchronous learning days: January 20, February 17, and June 2.

CDL Continues for Grades 4-14 - Community Message

Dear BSD Community,

At this week's School Board meeting, administrators announced plans to extend Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) through the end of the first semester (February 8) for grades 4-12. We continue to consider extending CDL through February 8 for grades Pre K-3.

Grades 4-12

We’ve been watching the county and state COVID-19 metrics closely. While the Beaverton School District is located in Washington County, we’re linked with Multnomah County because more than 10% of our employees live in that neighboring county. To be able to start hybrid learning (part in-school/part CDL) for grades 4-12, the following metrics would have to be met:

  • 10 or fewer cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people in Washington (and Multnomah) County over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row
  • Test positivity of 5% or less in Washington (and Multnomah) County over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row
  • Test positivity of 5% or less statewide over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row

Given the trajectory of the health metrics, we don’t believe that we’ll realistically meet those numbers by November 16, the end of the first quarter. We have previously communicated that we’d be making the decision to continue in CDL on a quarter-by-quarter basis.

Grades Pre K-3

As established by Governor Kate Brown, the criteria for starting hybrid learning with Pre K-3 students is different:

  • 30 or fewer cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people in Washington (and Multnomah) County over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row
  • Test positivity of 5% or less in Washington (and Multnomah) County over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row
  • COVID-19 is not actively spreading in the school community

Again, current health metrics aren’t trending in a positive direction. However, we’ll wait until October 19 to make a final decision for the quarter.

Know that if we were to see a drastic change in metrics or the Oregon Department of Education/Oregon Health Authority changed the guidance, we could alter our decision. Our goal is to provide you with as much information as possible so that your family can make plans accordingly.

School Meals

Our Nutrition Services department has developed a plan for providing meals during Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL). We have just received waivers from the USDA which allow any child (age 1-18) to pick up free meals.

  • Parents or guardians may pick up meals for students who are not present.
  • Meal pickups will occur two days per week: Tuesday (2 days of food) and Thursday (3 days of food) from 11 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Meals will be packaged with breakfast and lunch together.
  • Masks must be worn by anyone picking up meals.
  • Meals can be picked up by driving up to the cafeteria doors @ Elmonica.
