Toussaint L'Ouverture was a former African American slave in Haiti in 1777. In 1791 he led a huge slave revolt against the French in Hispanola. His army helped the French defeat the Spanish in 1795.

Once L'Ouverture was thrown into he died shortly after. His death angered the people in Haiti and they fought the French and independence was won by Haiti.

How did he free his country?

Toussaint was born a free slave in Haiti. He realized what his life goal was and that was to make Haiti a free country. In order to do this he had to gather an army. He wanted to fight off the Spanish, but the French got involved. Once he fought the Spanish off he was made the governor of and he fought the French but he lost. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead in the French prison and his death angered the people in Haiti and they fought for independence and won.
