Principal's Messages
Dear Hiawatha families,
I am excited to announce that our wonderful PTO has partnered with us to bring the Vermont Ballet Theatre to our school for a daytime performance on January 24th at 2:00PM. MUSICAL PETTING ZOO COMING TO HIAWATHA ON JANUARY 31 AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We have a wonderful opportunity for our students in Grades 1-3 to be introduced to the instruments of the orchestra AND to be able to try the different instruments. A "Zookeeper" from the Vermont Symphony Orchestra will bring a variety of orchestral instruments to our school. After an explanation and demonstration, the children will get a chance to try the instruments on their own, under the supervision of "handlers". And this is where parents come in!
The Zoo will be presented 3 times throughout the morning, one time for each grade level. We need 8 volunteers for each presentation, who will staff the instrument tables and assist the children. No prior instrument knowledge is required, although it would be helpful. You may sign up for 1 session or for more. Please consider coming and helping the children learn more about musical instruments!

Happy New Year Families!
At Hiawatha, we continue to work on schoolwide implementation of the Zones of Regulation. In this framework, students are learning to become more self aware of their regulation states, and develop capacity to regulate themselves. Please see the schoolwide visual linked here. Feel free to print for home.
We have three major learning targets for our students that you can reinforce at home:
Our feelings change.
When out of the Green Zone, there are things we can do to help ourselves go back to Green.
Please be in touch with any questions, or if you’d like more information around integrating this work into students’ outside of school lives.
Take care!

Hiawatha’s Inform & Inspire Speaker Series
Wednesday January 29 - Raising Inclusive Kids: Talking to Kids on Race - 6 p.m
In the second "Inform and Inspire" series event at Hiawatha School, staff, educators and the community are invited to learn about how to address race with kids. Dr. Marissa Coleman is a clinical psychologist and fellow Hiawatha parent. Her clinical and consulting practice prioritizes equity, diversity, and inclusion. This specific discussion will focus on a brief overview of the socialization of race, strategies for discussing race with school-aged children, and common barriers to having critical conversations about race. The discussion will be interactive with an emphasis on co-creating an inclusive space in order to explore how we are all socialized by race. More information about Dr. Coleman’s practice can be found on her website at www.DrMarissaColeman.com.

Winter Outdoor Gear Reminder
During the winter months, please send your student to school with a hat, a pair of gloves or mittens, a coat, snow pants, and boots. If students do not have boots and snow pants, they will need to stay on paved areas of the playground during recess. This is done to keep them dry.
Also, please pack shoes for your student to wear inside the school building. Wearing wet snow boots is not only uncomfortable but makes for wet floors, which can lead to injury.
If you need assistance with obtaining winter gear, please contact me or Mrs. Grykien (kgrykien@ewsd.org).
Thank you,
