Library News 📚

Want to Be a Student Library Aide?

Rising Juniors and Seniors can sign up to be a Student Library Aide with their counselor. This course offers a full credit, allows students to provide a service to their school community, learn valuable interpersonal skills and job skills, and provides students an opportunity to learn a lot about the inner workings of the library. Students work the front desk, shelve books, process new books, read, complete projects, and hone their student leadership skills. One of our current Student Library Aides said of her experience, “this position in the library has not only exploded my creativity, but it has also served to help me become more social. I have seen these changes in me, and my friends and family are seeing them too.” Talk to a librarian or student library aide if you have any questions & to pick up an application.

Cyberbullying, Digital Drama & Hate Speech - We Are Kind and Courageous

This week during Advisory students participated in Common Sense Media lessons that taught about the effects of digital drama, cyberbullying and hate speech on themselves and their larger communities. They explored the roles people play and how individual actions -- negative and positive, intentional and unintentional -- can affect their peers and their broader communities. They were encouraged to take the active role of upstander and build positive, supportive online communities, and they learned how to cultivate empathy, compassion, and courage to combat negative interactions online. Here is a follow up family activity (English/Spanish) that you may want to explore.

JHHS Clubs and Activities

Here is a list of all the JHHS Clubs and Activities available to students. Explore your options and find a place to get involved!

PBIS Student Expectations

JHHS will begin a virtual rewards program for students during the month of October through the PBIS Rewards platform. This is very exciting news!! Students now earn reward points for demonstrating desired behaviors according to our Handley PRIDE expectations!!

When an administrator, teacher, or staff person acknowledges a student demonstrating these behaviors, they can now award them points through the PBISRewards website. All students have an account that they can access at PBISrewards.com or through CLEVER. At this time, the points that students earn will allow them to qualify for incentives. We hope to expand this effort by finding ways wherein students can “spend” their points, more to come on that! Please support this effort by encouraging your students to meet our school wide expectations each and every day!

PTSO

The Handley Parent Teacher Student Organization (the PTSO) works to strengthen relationships between families and faculty. We do this by sponsoring events, volunteering at school, and supporting our kids, teachers and staff.

Sign up for our monthly emails by clicking here or email us at jhhspto@wps.k12.va.us for more information! Cash and check donations are accepted through the main office and electronic donations are accepted via PayPal. Please help us spread the word that we could use a hand!
