Equinoxes and Phenomena
Equinoxes
Equinoxes happen twice a year, around 20 March and 22 September. The word equinox means equal night in Latin because when equinoxes occur, day and night are equal lengths. This happens because the sun crosses the plane of earths equator and earth’s tilt causes it to not point toward the sun or away from it.
Lunar Phenomena
A lunar phenomenon is a colour that appears on the moon. One of the theories about the cause of lunar phenomena is outgassing, which is caused by gas escaping from cavities. They appear as white clouds, haze or reddish shade
Solar Phenomena
Solar phenomena is changes in the suns appearance. A few of the solar phenomenons are:
Solar Flares
Solar flares are outbursts of flames from the sun. They can be up to a million kilometres long.
Filaments are dark clouds suspended from the sun by loops of magnetic force. They are dark, and somewhat cooler than the sun.
Spicules
Spicules appear as small spikes of material. These only last a few minutes.
Sunspots
Sunspots are cooler surfaces on the sun which have a large amount of magnetic force
