Week at a Glance
Marian Central Catholic High School Faculty Newsletter
April 13, 2019
A look back at this week may have had us thinking about some of the interruptions in our schedule, however, rather than looking at is as negative, we can look as it as a necessity for both the safety of our students and staff and for the spiritual nourishment of our students.
This week was completely filled with overnight retreats for many of our upper classmen as some seniors went on their overnight and some junior participated in the Kairos retreat. Retreats allow our students to take a needed pause from their regular, hectic life. It's an opportunity to strengthen the bonds of friendship and relationships between friends and staff members. It gives students time to peacefully and prayerfully reflect and build on their relationship with God. How fortunate our students are to have families who realize the value of a Catholic education that provides for these special and important opportunities to strengthen their spiritual lives.
Our safety drills went relatively well this week! It was a bit tricky, being that there were so many substitutes in the building... but we seemed to manage. Just remember, any time you have a sub, make sure very clear information is indicated on your sub plans for emergency procedures and where emergency information can be found in your room. You never know what may occur, and we need to err on the side of caution. A couple of things to remember... during all tornado and fire drills please remind your students that it is important to stay quiet until they are released. This will ensure that all will be able to hear any follow-up directions and allow everyone to be as safe as possible. Additionally, during evacuation (fire) drills, please make sure you are going out the door indicated on your room's signage. (you can also refer to the faculty handbook) Administration is looking for specific classrooms in their assigned area and when they are not exiting and stationed at the correct location, it could cause confusion and additional time. These drills are important, but we also want to get you back into your classroom as quickly as possible. Thank you!
Many of our juniors and several other students took their ACT test this Saturday. I am sure that it was a little tough for them, as they looked out the window and noted the crisp but sunny day, but I truly believe that our students take this test very seriously. Please pray for our students as they take their ACT, in hopes all really show what they know.... and I am sure that they know a lot!
Tonight is our annual dinner auction. With the theme being Casino Night, surely it will be a fun time for all! You can certainly still come and if you haven't bought a ticket for your guest, it's only $25! Remember that by participating in the silent auctions, live auction, and various other activities of the night, you are actually supporting our students, and in particular, our Fincancial Assistance Program, helping students whose parents may not be able to fund their child's Catholic education without a little help! Hope to see you there tonight!
Looking ahead...
Welcome to Holy Week. Yes this is a 4 day work week, but I am certain that you have you have packed the days with valuable learning experiences for our students! Since midterm of Quarter 4 is this Monday, please make sure that you have enough formative and summative assessments in your gradebook to truly reflect what your students have accomplished (please refer to the faculty handbook for minimum requirements). It is also imperative that your gradebook is as up to date as possible, in order for the students and parents to have the clearest vision of how the student is progressing in your class. This also helps Guidance, as they are continuously monitoring grades to ensure that all students are successfula nd achieving personal goals here at Marian. Thank you!
The week will begin with our wonderful band taking a tour through the McHenry Deanery to visit and perform for our Catholic elementary schools Monday and Tuesday. It will be a wonderful experience for our students as they "come home" to their schools as well as for the elementary students, as they experience what the band program at Marian can do! Hopefully it will also encourage other students to consider attending Marian in the future! There should have been a student list in your mailboxes this past week indicating who will be participating.
We will be having a homeroom on Monday, April 15. While our juniors will be voting on the prom court, the sophomores will need to report to the auditorium after attendance for a Josten's ring presentation. It will run about 20 min. (about 10 min longer than a normal homeroom) but then sophomores will be dismissed to their 2nd period classes, so make sure all of your sophomores bring their things to the auditorium please. Sophomore homeroom teachers are expected to come with their students to the auditorium to help supervise, but will be able to leave after the first 10 minutes so they can get back to their classes for the start of second period. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
A quick note...As the weather starts to get nicer (Let's not count the impending snow for this Sunday! Haha!) sometimes we feel the need to open the windows and let that fresh air in! Please just remember that they are closed and locked before you leave at the end of the day, for security reasons. Thank you.
In addition, this weather allows us to be a bit more vigilent on enforcing the simple dress code and other expectations with our students. This includes asking students to take off any sweatshirts or coats that may be over their uniform polo, not allowing any food or drinks other than water into the classroom (we know that the critters are out of "hibernation!"), and making sure our wonderful young men are still clean shaven and have appropriate haircuts! If you are in need of support in enforcing these, feel free to reach out to the office. Thank you for respecting the integrity of our school expectations, because as we know, our families understand that these are our school's expectations.
Did you hear? The winners of our raffle ticket contest are the sophomores and the seniors! What does that mean? It means that the seniors get prom day (April 26) off! Please note, though, that in order for a senior to be allowed to attend prom, they must be in attendance for the full day on Thurs., April 25... no exceptions! For the sophomores, they earned the ability to dress down for the last week of school... which for them is May 28-31. Way to go!
Prom is inching ever closer.... which also reminds us that the end of school is near! Monday is the last day for students to purchase prom tickets (during lunch). We have also provided families with guidelines for acceptable formalwear for their special day. If students have questions, please direct them to the office.
Prom day is also a noon dismissal day. We will be having lunch and a brief inservice that day, but no worries for those of you who are working prom. We will get you out in ample time! More information and an agenda will follow.
Finally, Senior Exemption applications will be pushed out this coming week. They are due in to the office by May 3rd 3:00 pm. As we did last year, it is advisable that you designate one day for your students during the week of April 29 to complete those forms for students who bring them to you (during a test or silent work time, etc.) so you're not bombarded on Friday, May 3. We are hoping this is at least as successful as last year in keeping our senior students focused to the end! Any questions, please reach out to Administration.
Have a wonderful weekend!
