Teaching Science is Phenomenal
Presented by Brett Moulding & Kenneth Huff
Brett Moulding: Teaching Science is Phenomenal
The Greater Rochester Teacher Center Network (GRTCN) is providing two in-person sessions with national presenters and authors Brett Moulding and Kenneth Huff, who will engage science teachers and science education leaders in 2 separate two-day sessions during the week of August 5-8, 2019. The professional learning will model three-dimensional science instruction and provide details and insights into science teaching and learning consistent with the New York State Science Learning Standards and the vision for science education described in the 2012 National Research Council’s (NRC) Report: A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Core Ideas and Crosscutting Concepts.
Brett Moulding is the Director of the Partnership for Effective Science Teaching and Learning and served on the NRC committee that developed A Framework for K-12 Science Education and was a lead writer on the Next Generation Science Standards writing committee. Brett has extensive experience in professional learning and co-chaired the development of the consensus report Science and Engineering Grade 6-12: Investigation and Design at the Center (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2019).
Kenneth Huff is a National Board Certified Teacher in early adolescence science. His present appointment is a middle school teacher of science in the Williamsville Central School District, Williamsville, NY. Kenneth serves the New York State Education Department as a member of its Science Content Advisory Panel, and he founded and leads a Young Astronaut Council for fifth through eighth grade students at his school. Most recently, he served The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine as a committee member for the consensus report Science and Engineering Grades 6-12: Investigation and Design at the Center.
Literacy for Science: K-5 Focus
This two-day professional learning session provides teachers and education leaders with a clear structure and set of strategies to engage students in science investigations supported by student reading and writing. The session provides teachers with ways to effectively use the Gather, Reason, Communicate Reasoning (GRC) instructional sequence to motivate students to want to read and write about science phenomena. The professional learning models all aspects of instruction and engages participants in doing science investigation and engineering design that leverage hands-on investigations to motivate reading and writing. The session is highly motivating and provides teachers with the tools to improve teaching science and literacy.
The professional learning provides each participant with a set of GRC lessons for each of the NY State Science Learning Standards for their grade-level and a clear understanding of how to effectively use these lessons to motivate students to read and write as part of science learning.
Dates: August 5 & 6 2019
Time: 8AM-3PM
Registered participants will be provided a copy of Teaching Science is Phenomenal.
Please note: Districts who are listed at no cost have LIMITED spots and should consult their Teacher Center Director or their Director of Professional Learning prior to registering.
Cost: Limited free spots for members of the Greater Rochester Teacher Center Network as well as the Penfield CSD. Please click HERE to see if you are a member district.
All other districts: $150 per person for a two-day program.
