Kutz Cougar Chronicles APRIL-2013
from Dr. Kahley
Where children care to learn and children learn to care!
Portfolio Conferences
Heads UP!!!
Just a cautionary note – As some parents/guardians are dropping children off in the morning, they are watching their children walk into the building as they are driving away. We’ve had a few near misses as many faculty and staff are crossing the same area to come into the building.
Please keep your eyes on the road so that we may maintain a safe environment in and around Kutz Elementary School.
Thank you!
Kindergarten Registration
Do you have an incoming Kindergarten or 1st grader new to Kutz? Does your neighbor, cousin, friend, or friend of a friend? Please get these future students registered as soon as possible! Our enrollment numbers directly affect the staffing that occurs in our building so we want our numbers to be as accurate as possible. Please contact Ms. Virgulti with ANY questions about how to register/enroll your child for school at 267-893-3904.
Thank you!!

Presentation on Internet Safety and Cyber Bullying Protection
Recently our 6th graders had a presentation given by Officer Mary McCoy, Special Agent with the Bureau of Investigative Services. She shared some eye-opening experiences and this is what we learned:
Key Points:
· The legal age to have a Facebook account is 13. All children that have a Facebook account under the age of 13 should have the account closed.
· The top 2 modes child predators use to reach victims are:
1. Facebook
2. X-Box (most children were very surprised to hear this)
· Do you know what Formspring is? Snapchat? If not - you should - and these sites are not not appropriate for anyone.
· Students should pledge to keep personal information safe. Personal information includes name, age, address, school name, picture, and phone number.
· There are legal ramifications for cyber bullying and for posting inappropriate material online.
· Items, pictures and comments posted to social media outlets or sent through an electronic device are permanent.
· Students were told that if they feel they are the victim of cyber bullying, they should turn off their device and bring the device to a trusted adult.
· Students were asked to talk to their parents, teachers, or other trusted adult if they feel they have been the victim of cyber bullying.
· For more valuable information regarding internet safety visit the PA Attorney General’s Office website.

DRESS CODE
We believe in appropriate school attire. There is a connection between a positive school climate and reasonable attire.
If your child chooses his/her own clothes to wear, please remind him/her that some outfits are not appropriate for school. [Student dress should be comfortable, but not too casual.] All students are expected to demonstrate acceptable taste in their dress habits. Students are expected to avoid extreme short pants, tops with exposed mid-drifts, and any tee shirts with offensive or tobacco/alcohol-related images. Some warm weather outfits are appropriate for a 5-year old child but not appropriate for a more mature 10 or 12-year old student.
The following are guidelines for apparel for all students:
· All clothes should be clean, neat, and in good taste.
· Flip-flops or beach footwear are not appropriate for school.
· The length of shorts is to be appropriate for school and there is to be no verbiage on the seat.
· Halter and crop tops for girls are not permitted. Spaghetti straps are not permitted for upper elementary grade students.
· Indecent and unsavory slogans, expressions, etc., are not to be worn on clothing.
· Muscle (sleeveless or revealing) shirts are not permitted.
· Undergarments are not to be visible.
Any attire the administration considers to interfere with quality of education shall not be permitted.
Help Wanted!
Spring Fair needs YOU! We could really use someone who would like to learn the ropes of Spring Fair this year in order to take on the role of Chair-Person for next year (2014). How about two people who may want to be Co-chairs? Do you and a friend want to make this valuable contribution to Kutz? If you are interested please email Dr. Kahley at jkahley@cbsd.org.
Boomerang Award
This year, Kutz will continue to accept nominations for the Boomerang Award, which is our way of honoring students who best demonstrate their own developmental assets. What are Developmental Assets? Students possessing a combination of “40 Assets” are typically most successful in school and in life. These assets have the power to influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults. For a complete listing of the 40 Developmental Assets visit: www. Search-institute.org.
April: #25 Reading for Pleasure. Young person reads for pleasure most days of the week, either alone, with family members, or with friends.
