Welcome Back Petrova Families!!
Dear Petrova Families,
I hope you all are enjoying your summer and that you are excited to return to school! On behalf of the entire faculty and staff at Petrova, we want to welcome our students and families, new and returning, for the upcoming year.
Students return to school on Thursday, September 5th. The Petrova Elementary school day will begin at 8:45 a.m. Students who are walkers or who are picked up by a parent will be dismissed at 3:25 p.m. and students who ride a bus will be dismissed at 3:30 p.m. This is a change from last years dismissal times, as our school day has been extended 10 minutes this year. To ensure the safety of all students, we ask that you abide by the established routine when dropping off or picking up your child. Students who will be dropped off between 8:20-8:45, should be dropped off on Petrova Avenue and will walk to the front of the school. For safety reasons, please do not drive into the bus circle or adjacent parking lot for any reason during pick up/drop off time. Supervision is available beginning at 8:20 a.m. each morning and students should not be on school property or in the building before this time. If you are picking up your child after school, please gather outside door #14, which is located on the Petrova Avenue side of the building at 3:25 p.m. This is also a change from last year. If there is a change to where your child is going after school, please fill out the Dismissal Change note and have your child give it to their teacher first thing in the morning. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in following these procedures.
I encourage you to contact the school (891-4221) or visit our website (www.petrova.slcs.org) at any time should you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your continued support of Petrova Elementary. On behalf of the entire Petrova Elementary staff, we wish all students and families a very successful 2019-2020 school year!
Sincerely,
Bryan Munn
Petrova Elementary Principal
WELCOME TO PETROVA/STAFF CHANGES
As we start the new year school year, please welcome the next generation of educators and support staff joining our family. Several of these staff are new to Petrova, but not new to the district.
Susan Syrup - Sue is our new 12:1+1 Special Education teacher. Sue is a familiar face in the district, but new to us at Petrova. Sue comes to us from the Middle School.
Jennifer Moore - Jen comes to Petrova from the High School. Jen is very excited to be a part of the Petrova Family as our new art teacher. Welcome aboard Jen!
Rachel Dalton - Rachel is our new 4th grade teacher. Though new to the district as a teacher, Rachel was born and raised in Lake Clear and is a graduate of our school district. Welcome to the family Rachel!
Jessica Seymour - Jessica is also new to Petrova, but not new to the district. Jessica was hired as a Social Worker during the 2018-2019 school year and has been working at the high school. Jessica will make the move to Petrova and Bloomingdale beginning this school year. Congratulations to Jessica and her husband, as they are expecting their first child prior to the start of the school year. Welcome to Petrova Jessica and good luck with your new little bundle of joy!
Elizabeth Finlayson - Elizabeth will be joining us as a long-term substitute Social Worker, while Jessica is on maternity leave. Welcome Elizabeth!
We will also be hiring several TA’s and Aides in the weeks prior to the start of the school-year.
Positivity Project
This year, Petrova will continue to participate in the Positivity Project!
“I can sum up positive psychology in just three words — Other People Matter. Period. Anything that builds relationships between and among people is going to make you happy.” -Dr. Chris Peterson
The Positivity Project is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping America’s youth build stronger relationships by recognizing the character strengths in themselves and others. Their vision is to create citizens and leaders who will enhance our communities and country by internalizing the belief that “Other People Matter.” Positive psychology’s scientifically validated 24 character strengths serve as its foundation. Positive psychology teaches that people have all 24 strengths within them – and that character is not just skills or behaviors, but rather an intrinsic part of each of us.
The Positivity Project ideals evolve throughout a student’s whole school career. The 24 character strengths develop and gain more meaning for students as they grow. Once students learn the meaning of each strength and what it looks like, they can then be embedded into the curriculum in every subject area. The character strengths become a part of a common language and they will see them in everything that they do.
Each classroom will provide a daily 10 minute lesson on the weekly character trait, and it will also be infused in our daily language and expectations. We will also be talking about it daily on the announcements and at our Friday AM Meetings. If you have any questions please let Mrs. Laba or Mrs. Cassidy know!
