What's happening in our Classes!
PreK
PreK started on September 6th. We have two groups coming at different times one at 7:30 including breakfast and one at 9 including lunch, to give them more focused attention. However, they also overlap to give them more social and play interaction with a larger group.
Mr. J's K and 1st Grade (and 2 in the afternoons!)
Mr. Jenson’s room have been working on classroom routines. Kinders have been reviewing letter recognition and letter sounds. 1st graders have been working on sight words, word families, and spelling rules. They have been working with the new social studies curriculum in the afternoon focusing on local government.
Mr. Near's 2nd/3rd Grade Math/ELA
Mr. Near is the part time 2nd and 3rd grade teacher for Math and Language Arts. He has been working writing projects. They have been reading, “My Side of the Mountain” to build their interest and use their background knowledge about survival in the wilderness. They are ready to write their own stories or steps used in survival tasks. In Math they have been working on word problems and math facts.
Ms. Cook's (3rd in afternoons) 4th/5th Grade
Ms. Sonya interviewed the families of the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders so increase her understanding about what her students would be interested in reading and writing about. They are working hard on establishing routines in the classroom to promote more group learning. Group learning takes more planning and structure than independent work, but the long-term benefits for teamwork as well as individual growth are wonderful! Of course they are working on their regular subjects as well.
MS/HS Grades
The Middle School and High School Schedule is following a block schedule this year. This means that longer periods allow for more project work and Thursdays are left for electives – again, longer periods for outdoor activities or field-work. Their class schedule is listed below.
