Community Club Donations
The Community Club is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, October 19th from 6:00-10:00 PM at the Community House. Our PTC will be collecting gift card donations of any denomination and type for this event. The goal is to have a gift card tree donated from Gates Mills Elementary School to be placed in the silent auction. Please send your donations to the main office and we will ensure PTC gets them.
The Community Club supports our 5th graders by allowing us to use the Community House during graduation and by providing the 5th grade graduation gifts. This is such a great way to support our community and a great way to give back to the Community Club!
Gift cards will be collected through the PTC and collected up until October 15th. Please send any gift card donations to the main office. We will ensure that PTC gets them.
Thank you in advance for your support and if you have any questions please contact DeAnn Dominish at 440-391-1112.
Inside the Idea Lab
On October 1 in Library/Idea Lab we read a very informative new book titled The Imperfect Garden, written by Melissa Assaly and illustrated by April Dela Noche Milne. The book is about how produce that doesn’t look uniform is often thrown away or sold for less than the “perfect” produce that we see lined up at the grocery store, even though it tastes the same and has the same nutritional content. We learned that 168 million tons of food is wasted in North America every year! After reading about “two-legged carrots, twirly-whirly cucumbers, and funny-faced apples” we used our interactive TV to search the internet for more images of “ugly” produce. We discovered that there are many companies now that sell the less-than-perfect-looking fruits and vegetables to consumers so that this food is not wasted.
Next, we drew our own imperfect fruits and vegetables and added facts that we had learned from our story earlier. Please ask your students to share these pictures and facts with you! We then took turns searching for and checking out books, including featured books about gardens and gardening. Finally, in many classes we had time to read a fun story about a different-looking pumpkin, The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin, written by Joe Troiano and illustrated by Susan Banta. Many students recognized this popular tale that has also been made into an animated cartoon.
Please help your students remember to always put their library books in their backpacks as soon as they have finished reading them. Our next library day is Monday, October 7th. Your students received a bookmark with this due date in their checked-out books this week. Please help them to turn in their books on time in order to earn fun prizes throughout the school year.
