Negley Mission Statement
Ahoy Navigator Parents!
Wow! The week after spring break flew by for us! We are ready to finish out the last 9 weeks of the school year. Can you believe it?
We are beginning to see an increase in student behaviors. Please remind your child of your expectations for their behavior at school. This will help us a lot!
We are also experiencing a great amount of tardies! We can do better! Instruction begins once the bell rings at 7:30. We will be making phone calls to parents of students who are chronically tardy to see how we can support you in getting your child to school on time! As a reminder - tardies are added up and can turn into a whole day of instruction missed. As always, thank you for your help with this.
Ok families! We are going to bite the bullet and do it! FAMILY NIGHT - STREAM(Science, Tech, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math) NIGHT IS THIS THURSDAY FROM 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. We have super fun activities planned in each subject area for your child to do. We will be seperated by grade levels throughout the campus. A map will be sent out on Wednesday so you will know where to go.
AND - we are having a Negley SPIRIT NIGHT AT MOD PIZZA! So, have dinner before or after STREAM night - how easy is that?! We do ask you to bring your patience - it will be crowded! We will even help you get your steps in - so remember your walking shoes - parking is limited!
Have a great weekend!
Captain Crowther
Ms. Garza's class made butter!
We are doing our farm animal research right now (living organisms), so we made butter today, retold the story of "The Little Red Hen", and made cornbread! The kids wanted you to know that it was really yummy even though it took a lot of time and shaking to make!
READING PASSAGES AND MATH GAMES FOR THE WEEK! (updated weekly) Homework!
READING PASSAGES FOR THIS WEEK: New Passages Every Week!
One way you can practice fluency with your child is the adult reads the text first and models fluent reading with appropriate phrasing and expression for the text. Then the student reads the same text to the adult while the adult provides assistance and encouragement. The student continues to reread the text until the reading shows signs of fluency (words are read correctly, reading is fairly smooth, the reader uses punctuation to guide pauses and voice inflections). This usually takes three to four readings.
Math activity: We now have math activites by grade level!!!
Math Lessons by Grade Level to do at home!
PreK- Part-Part-Whole
Kinder- Part-Part-Whole Word Problems
1st Grade- Part-Part-Whole Word Problems Part 1
2nd Grade- Two Step Addition and Subtraction Word Problems Part 1
3rd Grade- Problem Solve and Explain with Two Step Addition & Subtraction Word Problems
4th Grade- Solve Word Problems with Fractions
5th Grade- Multiply Fractions with Word Problems Part 1
Please be sure to look at the upper right hand corner of the sheet for a video tutorial.
Math Fluency:
The biggest thing students need to develop fact fluency is consistent, frequent opportunities to practice. The more students practice their facts, the more quickly they transfer from short-term to long-term memory.
NEW Math Fact Fluency - District Resources
You can print the activities at each grade level, or play some online games! Students will be working with these games in class as well. The videos are very helpful, so be sure to watch those. You will notice that Kinder and 5th are not included. That doesn't mean you can't work on some of the game strategies. Kinder - take a look at some of the skills and introduce them to your child. As for 5th graders - they ALWAYS need practice with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division - have them work on those electronic games and time them!
HAVE FUN AND CELEBRATE YOUR CHILD GETTING BETTER AND FASTER IN READING AND MATH!
Academic updates
3rd, 4th, and 5th ELAR has kicked off their STAAR CAMP and the kids are so pumped!!
In 5th Grade, they started this week by rocking out with their lead4ward rocking review!
Students were setting goals, looking forward to what is planned for the next few weeks, and reviewing all the genres that could be tested on STAAR.
All the teachers are focusing on what their students need and how they can best support them. I can tell you that we are already seeing growth just since the benchmark!!
In 4th Grade, students are working collaboratively to explore the new Cambium platform.
I saw teachers engaging students by working in pairs, playing Kahoot, and using lots of fun games and strategies to review reading passages.
I also got to see students graph their growth and reflect on their progress.
I saw some truly inspiring things while I was out visiting classrooms!
In 3rd Grade, camp decorations, team names, and team chants filled the building!
The energy and excitement was radiating from the kids as they created posters to show what they know about various genres.
Things are clicking and students are excited to earn points for their camp cabin.

KINDNESS CLUB NEWS!
Kindness club met on Monday morning and created posters for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Our club thought it would bring some joy and encouragement to all the kids getting ready to benchmark and test. They have been hung in each hallway.
Ms. Steubing, club sponsor, shared this sweet note with the teachers:
"I wanted to say that it really touched my heart hearing the kids this morning. As they talked amongst each other I could clearly hear your voices. They said things like, “you are more than a test”, “problem solve”, “you can do this”, “I believe in you”, and “try your best”. It really made my day and I wanted you to know that they listen and what you do makes an impact. "

Notes from Nurse Jill
We are seeing an increase in red eyes at NES this spring. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if they are allergy or something contagious like viral or bacterial “pink eye”. Always consult your child’s doctor for eye concerns but here is a helpful chart to know the symptoms between the different eye irritations. This link is a good resource too:https://www.findatopdoc.com/Top-Videos-and-Slideshows/Pink-Eye-vs-Allergies
We continue to encourage good handwashing and use of hand sanitizer at school to help slow the spread of any and all contagions. School health policy for pink-eye includes school exclusion and antibiotic eye drop use for 24 hours before returning to campus. Thank you!

CRITICAL SAFETY REMINDERS IN OUR SCHOOL ZONES
It's always important to review general safety practices while dropping off or picking up students at school. Here are some reminders:
1. DO NOT have your child exit the driver's side of the car at school. It is not safe. Students should exit the car on the passenger side against the curb.
2. it is a LAW that cell phones are not to be used in the school zone areas. If you are talking on the phone, holding the phone, etc. you are multi-tasking and not really able to give 100% close attention to the activites going on around you or having both hands on the steering wheel. A hefty fine is not what we want our parents to have to pay by breaking this law. This is something we see on a daily basis.
"Cellphone laws to remember
- You cannot send or receive electronic messages while driving in Texas.
- Drivers with learner's permits are prohibited from using cellphones in the first six months of driving.
- Using any handheld device in your vehicle in a school zone is illegal.
- Drivers under the age of 18 are prohibited from using handheld devices.
- School bus drivers may not use cellphones at all while driving if children are present.
- Cellphone laws can change from city to city.
- Learn more about Texas texting while driving
laws"
3. Stay in your drop off lane and do not go around other cars unless you are directed to do so by a staff member. It's easy to become impatient, especially when you are late. Besides, you'll just get caught at the stop sign and the car you went around will be right behind you in 3 seconds.
4. Our school zone speed limit is 20 mph. If a child were to run out in front of your car while you are going 20 mph, it will still be hard not to hit them. Going faster reduces brake/impact time thus resulting in a more tragic accident. I know that NONE of you want to hit someone else's child.
"Fines for Speeding in a School Crossing Zone
Most drivers don’t like to slow down for Texas school zones, although they would probably feel differently if they were in an accident and a child was hurt. In order to make sure that drivers recognize the importance of obeying the school zone speed limits, Texas has imposed increased fines and court costs on drivers caught speeding in school zones. At the very least, there is an extra $25 court cost added on to the cost of your ticket. This money is collected and used to fund school crossing guard programs and other programs related to child safety.
In addition to the court cost, fines for a Texas school crossing zone ticket can vary based on what city, county or municipality you receive a ticket. For example, if you are ticketed for speeding in a school zone in Houston, San Antonio and Austin, fines start at over $200 for speeding 1-5 MPH above the posted speed limit and well over $300 if speeding more than 30 MPH."
To help everyone get to where they need to be in a safe, timely manner, here are a few pointers:
1. Have all lunches and backpacks packed and ready to go the night before. Have your child pick out their clothes the night before.
2. Wake your child up 5 minutes before you really want to get them up. This gives them a little bit of "wake up" time before they must get out of bed!
3. Leave your house 5 minutes earlier than normal to see if this helps with traffic. Our car rider line doors open at 7:00 am. We usually have a lull between 7:05 and 7:15, and then the traffic picks up again.
4. If your child's actions (or inactions) are the cause for them being tardy, let one of my AP's know. They can talk with them about what's going on and why they need to get to school on time. Now if it's you, mom or dad.....
Just a few adjustments in your morning routines will help you get your child to school on time, and get you to work on time in a safe manner and on a positive note to begin the day. Thank you to those of you who are following all the rules. Thank you to everyone for working on this to make our school safe and efficient.

News from the District
Take 5 for SEL
90% Attendance Rule
While we understand and are empathetic to circumstances out of your control, there are attendance laws that all schools must follow.
In addition to compulsory attendance law, districts are required to enforce the 90 percent rule, which states that students in grades K-12 must attend class for 90 percent of the time it is offered to receive credit or a final grade. The 90 percent rule applies to most absences, including excused absences. If the student doesn’t meet this requirement, an attendance committee may grant the student credit or a final grade, depending on the circumstances.
Remember to bring your picture ID - always!
This does not apply to evening activities - just the school day.
