A Letter to Students And Parents
Dear Students and Parents of Scottsburg High School,
On Feb. 14th, our country witnessed a tragic event at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. 17 people were killed by an armed intruder on campus. We want to assure you that school safety is something we take extremely seriously and are listening.
It has been well publicized that national organizations are encouraging students to walk out of school for 17 minutes on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, on the one month anniversary of the Parkland, Florida school shooting and on April 20, 2018, the 19th anniversary of the Columbine, Colorado school shooting.
The United States Supreme Court ruled on student speech in school in its 1969 decision of Tinker v. Des Moines School District. This case held students do not shed their free speech rights at the schoolhouse gate and thus students cannot be disciplined for engaging in free speech during school unless such conduct is disruptive to the school environment.
We sought options which give our students the ability to still participate while also remaining in a protected venue. While our administration encourages students to speak up and let their voice be heard on issues, we cannot allow students to leave class and congregate outside of the school building. After much discussion and consideration, we have decided the following regarding a student-led walk out:
1. Students who choose to take part in this may do so but MUST congregate in the
McClain Hall Gym during this time period.
2. Students who choose not to take part in this MUST stay in their assigned class.
3. This student demonstration will last 17 minutes.
4. At the conclusion of this student demonstration, ALL students must return to
class.
5. Teachers or other staff members are not to be involved in this process and they
are not to encourage or discourage student participation.
6. Students who choose to participate but do not use McClain Hall as their meeting
location or do not return to class promptly from McClain Hall will be considered Truant from that period(s) and will be subject to the discipline outlined in the Scottsburg High School Student Handbook.
The Scottsburg High School Administration, along with our Superintendent, want to continue discussing school safety, insights, concerns, and opportunities for improvement with our students. We plan to conduct one of these meetings with our Student Advisory Group members on Thursday, March 15th at SHS.
Thank you for your understanding concerning this issue,
Ric Manns, SHS Campus Principal
Jacob Johanningsmeier, SHS New Tech Principal
Casey Brewster, SHS HSTW Principal
