Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle
La Salle (born 1643-died 1687), was a French explorer who made his first expedition in 1669. Leading several journeys, he explored land along the Great Lakes and traveled down the Mississippi River ultimately ending up at the mouth of the river, and establishing a fort.

explored coastal Florida and the St. Johns River in 1562, but sparked almost immediate tension with Spanish forces in the area.
Jacques Marquette & Louis Jolliet
Jacques Marquette (born 1637-died 1675) and Louis Jolliet (born 1637-died circa 1700) were the first European explorers to travel down the Mississippi River from the Great Lakes, and also discovered the Missouri River along their journey.
