Mental Health Presentations
Please see the information to the left regarding RCPS mental health presentations for families. Topics include the following:
- Signs and symptoms of children’s mental health issues and typical teen development vs. when a parent should be concerned
- Typical adolescent responses to stress and trauma
- Risk factors for substance use
- Protective factors, school, and community resources

Virginia Growth Assessments
HVMS students will be taking the Virginia Growth Assessment in math 6-8 and reading 6-8 on September 13-14th. The first assessment is a pre-test of content for the student’s grade level, which is a change from last fall. For more information, click this link for county information, and click this link for information from the Virginia Department of Education.
Community Christmas Store
The Community Christmas Store's mission is to assist families in need during the holiday season. In order to qualify for assistance, you must reside in Roanoke County, Salem, Vinton, or Craig County, and you must apply at one of the following locations during the designated times:
Oct. 22 (Saturday) – Salem Civic Center – 110 Union St. (Enter at the back door at Chapman & W. Burwell St.) from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Oct. 29 (Saturday) – Vinton Senior Center – 820 E. Washington Ave. from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Nov. 2 (Wednesday) – Taylor Masonic Lodge - 1200 Texas St. from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Nov. 12 (Saturday) – Brambleton Center - 3738 Brambleton Ave. from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
You must bring the following information with you:
Picture ID with current address
Proof of income
Social Security Card for all listed on the application for verification
Proof of current residency such as most recent utility bill, copy of lease, etc.
Please know clothing sizes for those eligible
Breakfast/Lunch
Visit the Titan Parent Portal to set up an account to deposit money into your child's lunch account. Online payments have a processing fee of $2.60 per transaction. Parents/guardians can set up a free account to monitor student purchases.
Free/reduced meal applications for school year 2022-2023 are now being accepted! Online applications are available here.
CELEBRATIONS
SOAR Card Recipients
Students can receive SOAR cards at HVMS by going above and beyond our school-wide expectations of being safe, organized, accountable, and respectful. Our entire matrix of school-wide expectations is posted to the right. We will be distributing SOAR cards to students and parents/guardians by email, and recipients will be entered into monthly drawings for prizes. PTSO Lunch - Friday, September 16
The PTSO will be providing lunch on September 16th for our teachers and staff to show them they support and appreciate them. The PTSO will provide Chick-fil-A tenders and sauces, and they are asking parents/guardians to bring in other items. If you are able to, please sign up below. You can drop off your labeled items (in disposable containers) to the front office any time on Wednesday, Sept. 14th or Thursday, Sept. 15th. Thank you in advance for your support!
Moe's Taco Kits
The HVMS PTSO is introducing a new fundraising option for Restaurant Night this year! We have partnered with Moe’s Southwest Grill to offer Taco Meal Kits with all the ingredients needed for an easy, fun family dinner for only $35.99 plus tax.
$5 from every Taco Kit sold during this event will go directly toward supporting HVMS! Pick-up will be at Hidden Valley Middle School between 5:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
This will be a monthly fundraiser, and our next date is Tuesday, September 13. Place orders through this link: https://form.jotform.com/220095894313154 by Monday for pick-up on Tuesday!

School Safety Starts with YOU!
ATHLETICS
General Information
6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are allowed to compete on the middle school athletic teams. All participating students must have a current VHSL sports physical dated on or after May 1, 2022. No student will be permitted to participate in tryouts or practice without a completed VHSL physical form on file. Additionally, all students must have health insurance if they want to participate.

Open Gym/Field Information
Athletes must have a completed VHSL physical dated after May 1, 2022 on file with the HVMS athletic director to participate in open gyms/fields or tryouts. For questions, email Mrs. Riganti (hriganti@rcps.us).
Wrestling
Hidden Valley Middle School will host open gyms for athletes interested in wrestling during the 2022 season. Open gyms will be from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays starting September 12, 2022.
Boys' Basketball
Softball
Hidden Valley Middle School will host softball open fields after school on September 14th and September 28th.
Girls' Basketball
Hidden Valley Middle School is hosting open gyms for girls' basketball starting September 22. There will be a sign-up sheet outside Coach Burton's room (room 104). Participants must sign up to attend open gyms. Girls' basketball tryouts will begin Monday, October 17 from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
