Message from the Principal
Hello parents,
Another busy week has concluded.
On Wednesday, all 9th through 11th grade students took the PSAT here in school. The PSAT and SAT assessments provide our school with an abundance of data that impacts our instruction. We know the sub-scores that our students perform best on and the ones with the greatest room for improvement compared to students across the country. We plan to take this information, analyze it with our staff, and design ways to replicate our successes and improve the areas of previous struggle. College Board and Khan Academy have made this process even more effective and streamlined in recent years with substantial, user-friendly data reports and released test reading passages, test items, answer explanations, and even lesson plans for educators.
Parents of seniors came out on Tuesday night for a financial aid workshop hosted by the counseling department. Questions about the FASFA and other topics such as student loans, grants, and scholarships were addressed. Families found the information incredibly helpful. If you have never been through this process before, it can be quite cumbersome and confusing. Kudos to our counselors for helping to streamline these checkpoints for our students and their families on the pathway to college.
The first dance of the year for Junior High students will be this evening beginning at 7 pm. Please encourage your child to attend; it should be a great time!
Striving to bring out the best in every student,
Dr. Vivadelli

Woodbury Kids Forecast Weather in China
Students taking Chinese III have been working hard. They have done a great job in transitioning from engaging with teacher produced Chinese to interacting with authentic videos and materials. Last week, they finished up a unit on seasons and weather in China. They listened to weather reports via China's youtube, youku.com. They created their own weather charts for different cities in both China and the US. They took the information they learned and recorded their own weather forecasts. Great stuff!
A Peek in AP English Literature and Composition
Mrs. Luthke’s AP English Literature & Composition is getting into the Halloween spirit by studying Mary Shelley’s classic Frankenstein. Groups drew graphic organizers to represent the character development of Dr. Frankenstein and discussed the dangers of using science to play God.
AVID Students of the Month
Milan Williams (7th), Lola Alongo (8th), Xiomara Bourgeois (9th), Teddy Lockhart (10th), Aaliyah Robinson (11th), and Andy Figueroa Polanco (12th)!
Read...Read...Read...
Students in Mrs. Kalb's 6th grade literacy class have been setting weekly goals for how much time they want to read. Then they plan it out day by day, taking into consideration which after school activities they have scheduled and how much time they can devote to reading. Each day they are reminded to reflect about where they are in their progress toward their goal. Are they half way? Will they make it this week? How much do they need to read at home tonight to help them reach their goal? On Fridays, if they have met their goal they get a sticker for their reading card (2 stickers if they exceeded it!). Much like stickers on football helmets, these stickers provide a visual reminder that goal setting and hard work can have great benefits! It’s become a strong motivator! Mrs. Kalb's students rock!
Anyone You Know Work at Chipotle?
Chipotle is offering employees the chance to get a college degree, debt-free.
The giant Mexican food chain announced on Tuesday that it will give all eligible employees the ability to get a degree from an accredited university -- without incurring debt -- via an enhanced version of its "Chipotle Cultivate Education benefits program." In partnership with Guild Education, all tuition costs will be covered "up front," the company says, for 75 kinds of business and technology degrees from various universities.
Participating universities include the University of Arizona, Bellevue University, Brandman University, Southern New Hampshire University and Wilmington University.

Weekly Update - Oct 18
Staff Spotlight - Yael Emenecker
Subject: Literacy
Grade: 7
How long you have been at Woodbury: 17 years
1. What is your "go to" song for the journey to school?
Usually I listen to Preston and Steve on my way into work. When the commercial break comes on I switch to an audiobook. However, one can never go wrong with some Maroon 5!
2. Do you have a favorite saying or quote that you try to live by?
“Read a lot. . .” by Mr. Robby Richardson circa October 4, 2019
3. What is one of your hidden talents?
If I told you it wouldn’t be hidden – my talent is stating the obvious.
4. What are your "trapped on a desert island" books or movies?
A few of my favorite books include The Book Thief, All American Boys, Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, and The Color of Water. As far as movies go, I’d have to say Rescue from Gilligan’s Island and Cast Away, however they would be useless because I’d be trapped on a desert island. My real guilty pleasure is all things Marvel and of course Wonder Woman, but I would leave those behind because it would only make me sad to stare at the DVD cases knowing I can’t watch them.
5. If you could take your students on a field trip to anywhere in the world, where would you take them?
I would love to expose my students to the wonders of The Funplex in Mt. Laurel. This would be a fantastic adventure to take in late May, hypothetically of course. However, if that is too complex to plan, I would want to take them to visit Israel. Many non-Jewish friends in my life only know about Israel from the news and what is reported on television; and due to this think of it as a highly dangerous place. In reality it is one of the most amazing and beautiful places I have ever been. Old City Jerusalem in particular is profound because within feet of each other stand monumental and reverent holy structures for three major religions in the world (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam). It is an indescribable experience to visit this meaningful place and revel in the history, influence, and significance.
6. What is one piece of advice you would give to your students?
Nobody’s perfect, even if they pretend to be. The reality is you will mess up and make mistakes and stumble – a lot! What you do when that happens is key. Get back up and try again. My students know it as, “Make Butter” – an activity we do to start off each school year. See my website https://sites.google.com/woodburycityschools.us/yemenecker (which happens to be updated weekly) and scroll to the beginning of the home page for details.
