SMCJUHSD Community - January
Message from Dr. Caroline Cota, Superintendent
Dear families and community members,
The second semester is up and going! Our winter sports are in full swing. If you haven't had a chance yet, please check out basketball, soccer, and wrestling contests at our two comprehensive high schools. Game schedules are available on the King City and Greenfield High School websites.
As we head into the winter season, kindly remain aware of the weather conditions and their potential impact on our schools. In the event of any disruptions to bus routes or regular operating hours, we will communicate with parents through ParentSquare.
Seniors are in their last semester of high school. This is both an exciting and stressful time for students as they prepare for the transition to college, the military, or the workforce. It is equally important for seniors to stay on top of their grades, especially any courses that are required for graduation. The minimum number of credits required for graduation is 240. Students must also complete 20 hours of community service. All seniors must earn passing grades in English, Civics, Economics, AND in any other graduation requirements they have not previously met. Please check your senior's progress often. Our counseling and administrative teams are available to any students and families who desire assistance with this important time in our students' lives.
I also want to encourage all families to continue checking on your child's grades and attendance in Aeries. We are planning for summer school and any students who are behind in credits should be signing up for summer courses. Students can earn up to 15 units this summer to get caught up.
Please see below for more information on what is happening this month and links to family resources.
Have a great month!
Caroline Cota, Ed.D.
Greenfield HS Dimensional Art class is now complete with the new location with sinks. The MOTF staff did a great job organizing the construction project over the winter break. The Portola-Butler GHS campus was opened for the Spring Semester. We are working on installing a drinking fountain which should be completed in the next few weeks. We are still in the planning phases of the portable classrooms for the Portola-Butler GHS campus. The expected timeline for completion is the start of school in 2025/26.
Thank you to all the students, staff, and community members who participated in our Facility Master Plan events. We have received the draft report. We will be presenting it to the board in February.

The Teenage Brain
Have you ever wondered why teenagers get in trouble or experiment with risky behavior? If you are a parent of a teenager or a teacher, you find yourself questioning this on a daily basis.
There's a lot of research that has been done on brain development and how we can support and understand teenagers when their behavior is difficult to understand.
Most of us are not neurologists, so here's a video that may help all of us work together to support the teens in our community.
