Mrs. Grant's Kindergarten

April 22-27

Field Day

A plain red t-shirt and $1.00 donation is due to school by May 1. I have been told that Target and Walmart both have plain red t-shirts. :)

Welcome Miss Stewart

Tomorrow we are so lucky to have Miss Jessica Stewart in our room each day for the next two weeks! She is completing a field experience with her college and I know the students will enjoy having another voice in the classroom. :) (I will, too!)

Another pep talk....

Please go ahead and have another pep talk with your child about behavior and respect with your child soon! I am hoping we will have a productive rest of the school year

Parents, Punch, and Poetry

May 16th from 9:30-10:15. If possible, we would love to have at least one parent come to school on this day b/c we will be sharing poems, giving classroom tours, and showing off work. Please look for a formal invitation and snack permission slip coming home soon. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Words

Last week and this week we practiced writing sentences using adjectives. This week we talked a bit about the rules of contractions.

K.L.5 b. Demonstrate understanding of frequently occurring verbs and adjectives by relating them to their opposites.

Readers Workshop

We finished our reading toolbox unit and also worked on Author's Craft this week. We discussed craft 'moves' such as bold words, repeated words, ellipses, talking bubbles, etc. The students enjoyed finding these moves in their own books. We will be starting fairy tales next week

Math in Play

The students were interested in making paper airplanes. We decided to have a flying competition using rulers on the ground. They each took turned flying their planes, made signs rooting on their friends, and enjoyed measuring and comparing the flights!

Writers Workshop

We had SO much fun during our dialogue unit of study. We shared with our book buddies on Friday and the books came home with a checklist! Check it out!

Did you get a see our digital books??? They were so excited to share with you. Here's to hoping you were able to open the QR code. If you can't, please let me know!

Math Workshop

Our math test came home last week and this week we starting working on making ten. We used our ten frames mat. There is also a very FUN you tube video on making ten from Fatboy Slim that the students loved. Just search 'making ten'. We will continue to work on making ten next week and then start place value.

Tens Go Fish

pull out the Jack, Queens, and Kings (make the Ace worth 1)

play the same rules as Go Fish but you have to match combos of ten. Enjoy!

K.OA.4 For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number

Science

It all started with an Earth Day poem! Last week we learned a reduce reuse recycle poem and a student brought back their plastic water bottle to recycle in our room. A collection started in our room, then they came from home, and now we have started a service learning project with the whole school. We decided that our school throws away too many plastic bottles and we needed to let them know to do the right thing! We came up with a list of roles that we would all like to work on, met with Mrs. Patrick to talk details, and this Friday we wrote scripts, made signs, and videotaped our little PSA. I will share when our two editors (Jon and Tyler) edit the clips together with Mrs. Patrick next week. Here are some pictures that our picture taker (Maddie) while we were working.
