Prairie View Pony Express
April, 2018
Dear Prairie View Families:
We had an awesome turnout for the One School/One Book Family Night on March 8th! We hope you enjoyed reading The Chocolate Touch as much as we did and enjoyed each of the four stations that the Prairie View faculty put together for a fun family night. I’d like to thank everyone who attended and participated. Much appreciation goes to all of the faculty and staff for their contributions, the preparation work that went into getting ready for this event, and giving up a night with their own families to share the excitement of reading with our Prairie View families. This year, we coordinated with the other two K-3 schools in Sandwich (Lynn G. Haskin and Woodbury) to read the same book at the same time. With so many state-mandated initiatives, this is a voluntary program that the PV staff has chosen to offer for the second year. Many merry helpers made it a successful event. One person usually has to take the lead to pull everything together. That person for PV was Mrs. Hester. In addition to her daily teaching responsibilities, Mrs. Hester (first grade teacher) organized and planned this event. Thanks, Mrs. Hester, for another outstanding One School/One Book! We are hoping that this may have inspired you to do more family reading…..spring break would be a great time for another book…..or two or three! Besides our clocks “springing” forward, we recognized other spring events in March including: the Spring Book Fair, third quarter report cards, starting the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, also known as PARCC, (3rd grade students….will finish up in April), kicked off this year’s PPA sponsored Read-a-Thon, and celebrated Grandparents’ Day on March 23rd. Nothing says “spring” like the peeps of baby chicks….and yes, Prairie View has had their share of peeps! In partnership with the University of Illinois Extension of Boone, DeKalb and Ogle Counties, three, first grade teachers attended training that allowed them to have eggs and incubators in their classrooms. The week of March 19th has been pretty exciting when we got to witness several eggs beginning to crack. Before long….here a peep…..there a peep…everywhere a peep peep! It’s been a fun, hands-on experience for our students.
Spring activities don’t end with Spring Break which takes place from March 26th-April 2nd. School resumes on Tuesday, April 3rd and just a couple of weeks later on April 17th, the Spring Concert will take place at Sandwich High School. Flashback to the 80’s for some “totally radical” music…..leave your boom box and cassettes at home and join us for some gnarly tunes!
Sprinkles, no sprinkles…..a little whipped cream, a lot of whipped cream….how do you like your ice cream sundae? You’ll have to make those hard decisions on April 26th if you’re able to join us for the Prairie View Ice Cream Social and Basket Raffle. There may be a game or two to play, chances available for purchase to win themed baskets, and gallons of cold ice cream with plenty of topping choices. Hope you can join us on April 26th. We greatly appreciate your support of this school fundraiser. The April Character Counts pillar is citizenship. Due to the third Friday being an institute day, we will be wearing apparel the color of purple on the third Thursday (April 19th) in recognition of this pillar.
As we transition from winter to spring and we can safely put the snow boots away for another year, we welcome April showers in anticipation of those May flowers.

News from Mrs. Crane's Reading Room
Prairie View students know that the best way to become a fluent reader is to read every day. These students are keeping reading logs of what they are reading for fun at home. They list the books and chapters they read. They have been reading nonfiction and fiction books. Some books are mysteries and some are biographies. They plan to read every day, and enjoy books!
NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM
Kindergarten
The month of March was extremely busy for the Kindergarten classes! We kicked off the month by participating in the school-wide celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday. We did lots of rhyming and sentence building. We focused on composing and decomposing numbers 11 thru 20 as well as solid shapes in math. We also saw the Bubble Wonders show at the Opera House and a visit from our Grandparents.

Time Flies When You’re Having Fun!
Our second graders are excitedly learning how to read an analog clock. This can be a bit of a challenge for some, and it takes a lot of practice. One of the biggest challenges for them is learning to use the phrases half past, quarter past, and quarter to. It would be good to work this into your dialogue at home. The only downside to this unit is that they now know exactly when it is time to go out to recess.
3rd Grade
The third graders have been practicing for the PARCC test for the past month, and began taking the test in the last week of March, and will resume again after spring break.
Mrs. Karpus’ students wrote “How To” papers, detailing multiple steps in a project, such as a job they do at home. Her students enjoyed making shamrock people decorations for St. Patrick’s Day.
The third graders have been learning the fast and complex maneuvers of “stacking cups” in Mr. Sterkel's physical education class, which they demonstrated for their grandparents on Grandparents Day.
