Let's Build!
Week of September 6 - 9, 2022
Updates for the Week
Hello Wilkesboro families!
We hope that you’ve enjoyed this beautiful Labor Day weekend. We are calling tonight with some updates for the week of September 6-9. You can find full details from your child’s teacher by clicking on their names below.
Thanks for your patience as we’ve settled morning and afternoon routines. We are proud of our students for their independence. We want to let parents know we have new bus drivers on bus 158 this week and that YMCA after school pick up is at the first sidewalk on the bus lot, not the front office.
Please check your child’s green folder for invitations from our PTO to two upcoming events. On Friday, Sept. 9, PTO will host the first PTO after school dance of the year for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders from 3:15 - 5:00. Next week, on Tuesday and Wednesday, PTO will host Grandparents’ Day celebrations. Reservations are required for both, so please see invitations for full details.
We are recruiting interested parents and guardians to participate as part of our school parent advisory team. This team will meet four times this year to provide feedback to the school on our schoolwide program, policies, and events. We will meet on Thursday, September 9 at 6:00 for the first meeting of the year in the media center. We will discuss our school's participation as a Title 1 school, this year's parent and family engagement plans, safety planning, instructional programs, field trips, and other school events. We also set aside time at each meeting for parent questions. All are welcome.
Each week, we are focusing on building children’s language skills through specific speaking and listening routines at school. Last week, we focused on building language comprehension through asking and answering specific who, what, when, and where questions. Check out this week’s HANDY HANDOUTS to get ideas for how to support this skill for kids of all ages. Strong oral language skills are essential for strong reading comprehension.
On Wednesday, our third grade students will take the NC Beginning of Third Grade reading test. This test will be given first thing and will take about two hours. Results will be shared with parents and will help inform teachers about your child’s instructional needs in reading. This testing should not impact students in other grades.
We want to thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement and cooperation. We are grateful to our Wilkesboro Elementary family for so many things, and we look forward to another great week!

Build Language!
This year, we are working to build reading comprehension skills of all students through speaking and listening.
These oral language skills are essential for building reading comprehension skills in kids of all ages.

We Need Volunteers!
We welcome volunteers to help with school events. WCS uses Volunteer Tracker to help organize this process, and we use Sign Up Genius (shared via email and ClassDojo) to make signing up easy and convenient. To get signed up, follow steps below.
1. Go to www.wilkescountyschools.org
2. Go to the PARENTS tab at the top (or VOLUNTEER at the bottom).
3. Click on VOLUNTEERS.
4. Click on VOLUNTEER TRACKER.
5. Go to the green NEW REGISTRATION and follow instructions from there.
Level 1 volunteers can help in many ways. Level 1 volunteers can sign up to help with book fairs, school events, class parties and projects, Field Day, Fall Festival, and proctoring for tests.
Level 2 volunteers can do all level 1 tasks but can also help chaperone field trips and work more closely with students in small groups. Level 2 volunteers can also sign up for classroom tutoring and assistance, reading buddy program, tutoring, leading after school activities, and chaperoning school events field trips.
We ask that all parents/guardians who plan to attend field trips sign up to be Level 2 volunteers at the start of the year. It takes a few weeks to verify volunteers, and signing up early will make sure that you are approved in time for this year’s events and field trips.
Car Line Helpers Needed!
We are looking for friend, positive people to help on morning carline. If you're interested, please complete this form and we will be in touch. Thanks for considering this volunteer opportunity!

About Attendance
School starts at 7:50 each day. Students who are participating will be marked PRESENT or ABSENT. If your child is not in school, you will need to send in absence notes the next day and it will be coded as excused or unexcused. Written notes are required and can come directly from the parent/guardian or a medical office. Also note that ClassDojo messages are great for communicating an absence, but they do NOT serve as legal documentation of absences. Please send a written note. Thanks in advance for your help!
