Thanks for another great week of teaching, I also wanted to say thank you to all parents who participated in conferences this first trimester. We had very high levels of participation at all grade levels. By now you should have received the report cards for the first trimester, please take the time to review it with your child and set up specific goals for the second trimester.

I am excited to announce that the district is planning on allowing parents back on campus for drop off and pick up, as long as we all continue to follow safety guidelines (please wear a mask and exit as soon as your task is completed). The plan is to begin implementing these changes the week after returning from winter break (Target date Jan 18th) Once again, I am excited to see that we are slowly returning back to normal!.

A reminder that winter break will be from Dec 20th through Jan 3rd, first day back for students will be January 4th. Winter break provides the perfect resetting for our Positive Behavior Implementation and Support (PBIS) program. We have been using PBIS at Hoover for many years now, with great positive results, but what is PBIS? and how can parents help us with its implementation?

PBIS is a system designed to encourage positive behavior expectations, its main tenets are: Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible. The program recognizes positive students who adhere to the PBIS principles, students get a Husky Paw which they can later be exchanged for prizes. PBIS is a process that needs consistent and frequent reviews. PBIS is proactive, as it uses discipline data to promote continued positive behavior and identify specific areas for improvement. PBIS is educative as desired behavior expectations need to be taught consistently. PBIS is also functional as students engage in appropriate behavior and get rewarded for this.

What does PBIS look like at Hoover?

At Hoover, data is reviewed in order to identify target areas for intervention

At Hoover, PBIS is consistent, there are processes and procedures in place, as well as referral system to continue to collect data.

At Hoover, we use school-wide expectations and rules that are taught and reviewed consistently

At Hoover, we use prizes to encourage and reward positive behavior, as well as systems to discourage inappropriate behavior.

How can parents help with PBIS?

In order for PBIS to be successful at Hoover, we need your help, here is a list of suggestions of how you can help:

Remind your child of the behavioral expectations on a daily basis (before leaving for school and after your child arrives at home)

BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL AND BE RESPONSIBLE

Example of being safe on campus: Always walk quietly through the hallways, to avoid unnecessary accidents.

Example of being respectful: Keep hands and feet to yourself, be an active listener

Example of being responsible: Please clean your tables after eating, raise your hand if you need something

Testing all 2nd graders for North Star Academy.

Recently, the school district has decided to test all 2nd graders district wide in an effort to make North Star Academy a more diverse school. This is a great opportunity for our students! more information will be shared, if your child qualifies.

COVID 19 Vaccination Events:

A large number of our students have already received the first vaccination. RCSD families have several options for vaccinating their children in San Mateo County, which include healthcare providers, pharmacies, and other county and community clinics. Families are also encouraged to visit the San Mateo County Health website for vaccination events throughout the County. The San Mateo County Office of Education has also compiled this list of upcoming vaccination opportunities. The San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) hosted a webinar with San Mateo County Health addressing the latest COVID-19 community trends, strategies for safe schools, and vaccination updates. The event helped parents with answers to questions they may have had about the vaccination. Other resources for parents include tips from Johns Hopkins Medicine and a series of flyers from the San Mateo County Office of Education that share some of the reasons for children and youth to be vaccinated as well as myths and facts about the vaccine.
