September Design Principle: Success and Failure
"I try to let my decisions be guided not by what I think will succeed or fail, but what I'm going to learn from that process."
~Lin Manuel Miranda
Hello Glennwood Families,
We have had a wonderful week at Glennwood. Our Eagles returned from fall break recharged and ready to SOAR.
Fall is a beautiful time of year with lots of fun activities and cooler weather. Please be sure to check our calendar of events. There are lots of upcoming dates for Glennwood and PTA-sponsored events in October.
I previously announced before the break that we will host our first parent Coffee Chat on October 7 at 9:00 am. The topic will cover CSD's new grading practices. We would love to have a great parent turnout. If you plan to attend, would you please kindly RSVP HERE?
Friday, October 21st will be our last outdoor Community Circle. Beginning November 4, we will be returning to hosting Community Circle indoors in the auditorium. We will share more details and procedures for parents soon. We are looking forward to gathering again indoors for this special community time together.
Warmest regards,
Holly Brookins, Ph.D.
Principal
We encourage you to explore and join us in celebrating in some way. How? There are many ways to celebrate! Here are just a few of them:
Hispanic Heritage Month Resources for K-2 Students
Listen to Music
A great way to teach children about Hispanic culture is by exposing them to music in Spanish. Choose age-appropriate music or music by key figures in Spanish music or just sing along with the 21 Speaking countries song in Rockalingua (username: Glennwood and password: glennwood)
Get into the Kitchen
Food is always something that reminds people of home. Hispanic culture has a plethora of cuisine to enjoy from every Hispanic culture. Parents can get into the kitchen with their children and prepare recipes from diverse Hispanic cultures. Another option is to eat from a Hispanic restaurant and try something new. Nowadays, it is easy to find Argentinian empanadas, Cuban sandwiches, El Salvadorian pupusas, and Mexican tacos in the Metropolitan Atlanta area.
Read Spanish or Bilingual Books
Books and stories often tell a story that reflects the background of a certain culture. You can read Spanish language or bilingual books to your children to learn more about various Hispanic cultures. We have a small section of Spanish books in the Glennwood library that students and families may check out. Many of the books are bilingual in English and Spanish.
Join the special event at Winnona Park on October 11 hosted by the WP DEI Committee. See more details below.
Have a Great Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration! ¡Celebremos Juntos!
Author and Illustrator Visit with Mac Barnett & Jon Klassen on October 19 for K-2 Students
This visit is brought to us by Little Shop of Stories. Glennwood will be the second stop on their book tour! We are offering this book for purchase (along with a few of their other titles) which will be personalized to your child and signed by both authors. The order forms were sent home this week to you. If you did not receive it or if you need another copy, there is a pdf attached below.
All orders and payments are due next Tuesday, October 4. Checks may be made payable to Glennwood Elementary. The Glennwood Media Center earns 20% of all sales which is used to buy new library books. Thank you in advance for your support.

You guys did an amazing job last month, and I know we can do it again on October 7!! Please join us on your feet, your bike or your scooter (don’t forget those helmets!), and let’s show CSD how Eagles SOAR! Students who walk, bike or scoot will continue to enter at their grade specific doors, where they will be counted, using our traditional marbles, by their staff door monitors. We will have new incentives for participating this month! And, each marble will still count towards students earning extra school wide recess, with announcements made at Community Circle! Glennwood Staff Appreciation
October Snack Table Hosted by Second Grade
This year, to show our appreciation for our amazing staff, the Glennwood PTA will be sponsoring a staff snack table in addition to hosting other staff appreciation events later in the year. We are asking each grade level to "stock the table" for a given month; each grade will be asked to sponsor a staff appreciation event twice this year. We kindly ask that each family participate in one of the two opportunities for your grade level (the intention is that a family only needs to participate once).
For October, we're asking second-grade families to host a "Spooky Treat and Snack Table" for our staff on Thursday, October 27th. If you're a second-grade family, please visit the Sign Up Genius here to sign up to bring in something for our staff. Please drop off your items with Ms. Reynolds at the front office October 24-26th anytime during school hours and the PTA will assemble the snack table for our staff to enjoy on October 27th.
The PTA is also requesting clean-up volunteers, so please sign up via the Sign Up Genius if you can volunteer your time to help clean up. If you are unable to purchase items for the table but would like to donate funds towards the event, the PTA is also collecting monetary donations. Please Paypal your donation to the PTA at Treasurer@Glennwoodpta.org with a note that it is for the October Snack Table and we'll take care of it for you.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Staff Appreciation Co-Chairs: Haley Stevens (haleycstevens@gmail.com) or Samantha Bryan (samantha.chopp@gmail.com). Thank you!
