Sunset View Newsletter
Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year
Welcome Back Sunset View Families!
Welcome back to our returning families, and welcome to our incoming TK, K, and new families - I'm looking forward to a wonderful year together! I hope this message finds you all safe and well. I can't tell you how excited the entire Sunset View Staff is to begin the 2021-22 school year in person at Sunset View Elementary!
I know that you are all very anxious for information about the start of school! Our Office Staff returned last week and our teachers "officially" return this week (many are already engaging in professional development opportunities), so we are very busy reconnecting and planning for a successful start. Please be on the lookout for more information between now and the beginning of the school year.
First day of School: Monday, August 30, 2021 at 9:00 a.m.
Give yourself plenty of time to get to school. There will be a lot of traffic and limited parking.
Please call the office or send an email to Varsana at vtikovsky@sandi.net if circumstances have changed and you will not be returning to Sunset View.

Health and Safety Information
We are so excited to return to school in person! That being said, we are required to adhere to specific health and safety protocols. Please see below the protocols all Sunset View staff, students, and families are required to follow.
Students, staff, and visitors will be expected to follow strict health and safety protocols.
All students, staff, volunteers, and visitors are required to wear masks at all times indoors.
Masks are currently optional outdoors.
Students will remain with their classroom groups during recess and lunch.
Handwashing stations and hand-sanitizing solutions are readily available across the whole campus and students will be directed on when they are required to wash or disinfect their hands.
Merv 13 filters have been installed in our HVAC system.
We will continue to update and adjust health and safety requirements based on California Department of Public Health and San Diego Unified requirements. I appreciate everyone's cooperation in these matters.

Class Placement for grades 1- 4:
All class placements will be sent to you via email Friday the 27th in the late afternoon.
Teacher Requests
Each year I receive several emails from parents requesting specific teachers. Please understand that teachers spend hours creating new classes. When creating classrooms we prioritize things such as academic and gender balance, classroom/student dynamics, and opportunities for growth and support. Our Sunset View staff is committed to providing absolute excellence for every child as we honor and value all students' dynamic needs. Please know that unless we made an error in placement, i.e. placing a 1st grade student in a 2nd grade class, we will not be making any classroom changes during the first three weeks of the school year.
Before School
Students may arrive any time after 8:40 a.m. unless they are participating in the morning SAY program. Individual Teachers will send specific information about where to line up prior to the first day of school. Parents of students in 1st-4th grade, please plan to say your goodbyes at the gates, as we must continue to limit the number of people on campus.
Play Structures: We ask that children and their siblings not play on playground equipment in the morning before school begins. When students arrive they are to go to their line-up location. TK/Kinder students will report to the kinder playground.
After School
Students are released from their classrooms at 3:35 p.m. each day except on Thursday and all other minimum days when students are released at 12:45 p.m.
TK/Kindergarten pick-up is at the exterior classroom door.
1st grade teachers will walk their classes out to the flag pole to meet parents
2nd - 4th grade students will be released from their classrooms and meet their parents outside the school gates.
Volunteers
Please take a look at the district guidelines for volunteer requirements.
https://sandiegounified.org/a-to-_z_index/volunteer_opportunities
Here are the biggest changes to the guidelines and requirements.
School visitors/ volunteers must follow the school’s health and safety procedures such as signing-in, daily health check procedures, wearing a mask, and wearing the Visitor/ Volunteer badge at all times while on campus.
Essential volunteers who are fully vaccinated do not have to test weekly. Those not vaccinated do have to have a weekly COVID test.
Visitors who are unable to wear a face mask must arrange for an alternate family member to conduct business on their behalf; all volunteers must comply with the mask requirements.
Immunizations
All students must be up to date with their immunizations prior to the first day of school. The office must have a copy of complete vaccination records. If your child is not up to date with their CA STATE LAW REQUIREMENTS, they will not be able to attend school on the first day. Last year, we withheld two children from class and it was very sad. Don't let that be you! The health office will be reviewing all records next week. They will call you if your child is missing information. Please respond right away so we can update your child's file. Thank you!
Attendance
Please do not send your child to school when they are sick.
When your child must be absent for any reason, please call the office at 858-988-2000 by 9:30 a.m. every day of non-attendance, giving the exact reason for the absence. You can also email Varsana Tikovsky at vtikovsky@sandi.net.
Any child arriving after 9:00 a.m. must stop in the office and pick up a tardy slip. This is disruptive to your child and the entire class. Let's set good habits early in the school year to arrive on time.
Parking
We have very limited parking around Sunset View Elementary. Please be kind to our neighbors by keeping their driveways open and free. The staff parking lot is only for staff and we kindly request that you do not enter the lot. We also strongly encourage you to model good habits for your children by using the crosswalks. Please pass this important message along to anyone who may be picking up your children (grandparents, child care provider, etc.). Your child's safety is always top priority and never an inconvenience. We appreciate your help.
SDUSD School Safety Meeting
San Diego Unified School District is hosting a special School Safety meeting for families this coming Monday, August 23, at 5:30 p.m. on Zoom, and all are invited to attend.
This virtual town hall meeting will provide families a chance to bring up any questions or concerns about returning to school, and will also include district staff and medical professionals to share more details about the safety measures and procedures mentioned above.
Go to Zoom - Monday, August 23 - 5:30 p.m.
Konstella Access
Konstella is our school communication tool. This tool allows you to interact with your child's teacher, view and sign-up for events, and more! Please ensure you are signed up. Click on the video below for a brief introduction.
