Hypothyroidism
School project about a disorder of Thyroid gland
What is Thyroid gland?
It is a gland which controls the rate of metabolism and body growth
Hypopithyroidism
What is it?
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces insufficient number of hormones for the body. The hormone is named as Thyroid Hormones(mainly produced with help of Iodine).
It controls another gland in brain termed as Pituitary.
What happens actually?
The pituitary gland sends signals to other glands to produce hormones. If the pituitary gland doesn't produce proper number of hormones than many functions of body will be harmed like :
- Growth
- Reproduction
- Blood Pressure
- Metabolism
Are there any symptoms?
Yes there are many symptoms but the main are:
- Weight gain
- Low Blood Pressure
- Weakness
- Depression
- Muscle weakness
- Excessive sleepiness
- Dry, coarse hair
- Constipation
- Dry skin
- Increased cholesterol
- decreased concentration
- Swelling of the legs
- Vague aches
Causes of Hypothyroidism
1) Severe Iodine deficiencies
2) Radiations
3) Surgeries
4) Pituitary or hypothalamic disease
5) Medications
What about the cures/treatments?
The Treatment or the cure depends on the
- Age of patient
- Presence of other medical problems that may benefit from thyroid replacement
treatment (such as heart failure or depression)
- Presence of other medical problems that thyroid replacement therapy may worsen (such
as osteoporosis).
- It can be treated naturally or medically.
