September is Head Lice Prevention Month
Head lice are tiny, brownish colored crawling insects that live on human heads. They are about 1/8 inch long and lay tiny gray or white eggs that will stick to the hair shaft near the scalp. Lice are usually spread by direct head to head contact. They cannot fly or jump. They crawl quickly or fall off the head. Lice can only lay eggs on the head and eggs do not hatch if they fall off. Lice cannot live for more than 48 hours off of the head. Symptoms of head lice are itching of the head and scalp, crawling lice in the hair, eggs stuck to the hair shaft or scratch marks on the scalp that may look like a rash. Head lice do not spread disease and are not spread by pets.
Parents should check their children’s heads regularly for lice. Lice can be prevented by not sharing personal items such as clothing, scarves, linens or towels that have not been washed between uses, stuffed toys, hats, helmets, hair brushes and combs and stuffed toys. If you have any questions about head lice or treatment to get rid of head lice, you may call your school nurse at 816-986-2462.
