Social Studies:
What is the history of speed reading?
Speed Reading
Speed reading is any of several techniques used to improve one's ability to read quickly. There are many speed reading training programs including: books, videos, software, and seminars. In the 1950s a portable, reliable and convenient device was developed as a tool for increasing reading speed.Evelyn Wood a researcher discovered that the sweeping motion of her hand across a page caught the attention of her eyes.Skimming is a process of speed reading that involves searching the sentences of a page for clues for a meaning. When reading word by word, our eyes often skip back to a previous word or line. This method slows us down in reading and comprehending.
Normal Reading
Reading is a complex process of decoding words in order to construct meaning (reading comprehension).Reading is a means of language of communication, and of sharing information and ideas.Average readers are the majority and only reach around 200 wpm with a typical comprehension of 60%.Other types of reading are not speech based writing systems.
Math:
What is the average word per minute?
Top readers read at speeds of above 1000 words per minute (wpm) with near 85% comprehension.
Science:
How does information you read get process in your brain?
The human brain is a complicated, creative information-processing system. Information processing starts with input from the sensory organs, which transform physical stimuli such as touch, heat, sound waves, or photons of light into signals. The sensory information is repeatedly transformed by the algorithms of the brain in both bottom-up and top-down processing.Once information is processed an attention filter decides how important the signal is and which cognitive it should be made available to.
My own questions:
How are readers able to speed read?
For a long time, people have claimed to be able to read very quickly without loss of comprehension. Many people claimed they can teach this skill.it's possible to improve your reading speed, comprehension and recall after reading.
Are there more kids that can speed read rather than adults?
It is rare to find people that can speed read.People try to practice this skill people are born with this ability to speed read. You can try to learn but it might be hard. It’s pretty much even between kids and adults.
