Professional Learning Communities Facilitation Institute
The Office of Professional Growth and Innovation is offering a professional learning opportunity for teacher leaders who are responsible for supporting professional learning communities. This institute is designed to foster leadership growth for improved student outcomes and provide participants with practical strategies and tools for leading and facilitating high-quality collaboration. The institute will consist of 1.5 days of professional learning this summer and optional networking activities throughout the 2018-19 school year. Interested teachers should register in Frontline for either the July 10/11 or August 7/8 sessions.
College and Continuing Education Information Program
PGI will host the third annual College and Continuing Information Program for employees on Tuesday, May 29 at the Plaza Annex from 6 to 8 p.m. the event will provide all employees an opportunity to visit with multiple universities and colleges to learn more about available face-to-face and online degree programs, continuing education courses and certification programs/classes.
Announcements & Reminders
Holding the Point: This time of the school year provides opportunities for us to remind students of the high expectations we have here at LHS. Two such opportunities are with our dress code and tardies. Students with dress code violations should be sent to the office. Students who are tardy to class should be sent to the tardy station.
Hall Passes: Please remember that staff should not be writing passes from Academic Support Blocks for students to visit another teacher. There have been some reports that this has been occurring and security is getting a lot of calls with students roaming the halls. The students state they are going to see a teacher who it turns out has no idea they are coming. If you have any questions regarding this, please see Mr. Nelson.
An Eagle in Need: Sabrina Connor, one of our special education TAs, is in need of donated sick leave days. Please see Mrs. Muench for a form if you can help.
Bookkeeping Reminders: Business Services is providing a substitute bookkeeper during Mr. Yon's absence. Remember that you must have a signed purchase order before buying anything!
Citywide Advisers Conference: Registration is now open for the Activity Advisers Conference. This year’s conference theme is “I Love Advisers” , and the conference will be held on Tuesday, July 31 at Virginia Wesleyan College. While we are still confirming professional learning points, the schedule, and events for this year, you can sign up today using our online link found here.
Senior Final Assessments
EARLY FINAL ASSESSMENTS FOR SENIORS ONLY WILL BE GIVEN ON
MONDAY, JUNE 4 DURING BLOCKS 1B AND 2B CLASS TIME
TUESDAY, JUNE 5 DURING BLOCKS 1A AND 2A CLASS TIME
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6 DURING BLOCKS 3B AND 4B CLASS TIME
AND THURSDAY, JUNE 7 DURING BLOCKS 3A AND 4A CLASS TIME
Guidelines:*
- Seniors in “mixed” classes who are required to take a final assessment will report directly to the SCHOLA at the beginning of the block. These students will take their assessment in the Schola. Teachers must provide copies of their final assessment to Mrs. Muench by Tuesday, May 29. Please make sure you give Mrs. Muench everything your students will need to complete the final assessment (scantrons, calculators, passwords, etc.).
- Teachers must also submit the form from the end-of-year packet listing senior students who will be reporting to the Schola on June 4 through 7. This form must be given to Mrs. Muench by Tuesday, May 29.
- Seniors who are in “pure” (senior only) courses such as English 12 and Government will complete their final assessment during the appropriate block in the classroom with the teacher.
- Once the senior has completed the final assessment for a particular class, they are excused from that class (i.e. after Monday, June 4, seniors will not report to Block 1B and 2B, etc.).
- Grades for seniors should be entered by 3 p.m. on the day following the assessment. All senior grades must be entered by 8 a.m. on Monday, June 11.
*These guidelines are also included in the end-of-year packet.
Input on School Safety
Students, parents, staff and members of the public are invited to participate in one of two community meetings to be held Tuesday, May 15, at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Kellam High School.
Attendees will take part in small group discussions in order to gather feedback around three key questions:
- What does the school division do well in providing for school safety and security?
- What gaps exist regarding school safety and security that need to be addressed?
- What new resources can be added or what existing resources can be used in different ways to strengthen school safety and security?
Space at these community meetings is limited. Seating will be reserved for the first 500 registered participants. Online registration is open now. Those who are unable to attend a community meeting are still encouraged to share their thoughts about school safety through an online eTown Hall.
Closing Out the School Year
Parent Contact Needed
At this time of year, information regarding students in jeopardy of not passing a course is critical. We would like to identify all freshmen and seniors who are in jeopardy of not passing a course. Please identify those students who are currently at 66% or lower for their projected final grade. All teachers of 9th grade or 12th grade students will receive an email on Monday, May 7th with directions and the link for the Google spreadsheet.
Please submit the student names in jeopardy of failing no later than 2:30 on Friday, May 18th. Krissy Sanderlin is available to assist if you have difficulty locating the information or submitting via the Google form. Additionally, you are asked to begin contacting parents of students in jeopardy and document your contact in Synergy. Please contact the parents no later than Thursday, June 1st. While we are requesting this information specifically for 9th and 12th grade students, you can also review this information with all of your students.

Moving SharePoint Content to Office 365
DOT is preparing for the migration of the SharePoint-based department and school Intranet websites from their existing, internally hosted location to Office 365. The first phase of the migration will require staff to relocate their individual My Site and internal OneDrive files to their Office 365 OneDrive using the detailed instructions found here. Staff will receive one terabyte of data storage in their Office 365 OneDrive; however, it is recommended that staff members move only the files that are actually needed. My Sites will be set to read only on May 15 and access will be completely removed on June 18. Staff should move files before these deadlines. If you have any questions or concerns, please see Mr. McCollum, Erik, or Krissy.
