Course Description

Through a survey of American literature, students understand and appreciate American history to its fullest. Literature comes alive with an infusion of history as students read, analyze, and interpret a variety of genres, such as poetry, drama, folktale, and biography. Students are challenged to interpret each piece of literature soundly and handle literary techniques skillfully. At the end of this course, students have improved their vocabulary, grammar, usage, sentence structure, diction, punctuation, reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills.

If you email when I’m not “working”, you will most likely not get a response until the next day.

If you don’t check your email daily, you won’t know what you are missing. Also, make sure you EMAIL ME or CALL ME or TEXT ME when you need help. Don’t wait for me to reach out to you first. Be your own advocate. It’s essential in online learning.


Your writing submissions will usually be graded with 72 hours (not including weekends or holidays) of being submitted. Research papers may take up to a week to be graded.

Even though you may work 24/7, we do still have a calendar at Provost with various holidays listed. When there is a holiday, you probably won't be able to reach me, and I may not be grading anything that day. Make sure you take a look at the calendar to know those dates.


Once a month, we will have a live seminar. I will email you information about the time and place of the seminar in advance so you can plan accordingly. These seminars will be very important for your to attend and will be counted as Extra Credit!

The Seminars will be in one of the following classrooms:

Mrs. Ackerman’s Classroom:

Mrs. Goforth’s Classroom:

1st and 3rd quarters will be in Mrs. Ackerman's classroom and 2nd and 4th quarters will be in Mrs. Goforth's classroom. Don't worry. I will remind you of this many, many times.

Course Breakdown

This course is broken up as follows:

  • 4 Total Part
  • 3 Units in each Part
  • 15 Lessons in Unit 1 and 2 and 3
  • Each Unit Ends with an exam Resulting in 3 exams per Part

Deadlines and Pacing

Traditional Schedule

Part 1: Due October 21st

  • 1-2 Lessons/Day or 5 per Week

Part 2: Due January 14th

  • 1-2 Lessons/Day or 5 per Week

Part 3: Due March 24th

  • 1-2 Lessons/Day or 5 per Week

Part 4: Due June 4th

  • 1-2 Lessons/Day or 5 per Week

*Block Schedule

Part 1 and Part 2: Due January 14th
  • 2-4 Lessons/Day or 10 per Week

Part 3 and Part 4: Due June 4th
  • 2-4 Lessons/Day or 10 per Week

*If you are on block schedule, you are completing double the coursework in half the time. It is IMPERATIVE that you do not get behind!
