Welcome Buckalew Families!

We hope you enjoyed a long weekend this weekend. We have a BUSY month of OCTOBER ahead! Tomorrow we kick off our Boosterthon, our major fundraising event in the FALL! We will have a pep rally followed by a week of character-building activities as we make our way to our big FUN RUN next FRIDAY OCTOBER 19! In addition to the Boosterthon fun, we look forward to Walk to School Day this Thursday and Open House next Thursday.

Please read through the Buzz, as always, it is packed with information. While you read the Buzz, see if you can find the photo of the amazing NEW display in the front of the library to kick off our Boosterthon! Thank you to our AWESOME and CREATIVE parents for all that you do! We are so very blessed! In the next few days, you will be hearing about "Garret the Great" with Boosterthon, and maybe even meet him at Walk to School Day and Open House, Garret the Great, and his team will become a popular people around Buckalew while The Boosterthon Mind Spark Mystery Lab is here!

Mrs. Smith and I both want to thank our parents for flowers and a gift from our PTO in honor of Principal Appreciation. We both feel every day is a gift that we are blessed to work in such an amazing community with the outpouring of support that we get from each one of you.

Buckalew Bears on the Run 2018 Fun Run IS HERE!!!

Buckalew Bears on the Run 2018 Fun Run

Hi, Parents! Buckalew’s main fall fundraiser is the Buckalew Bears on the Run 2018 Fun Run! It’s a two-week program that kicks off with a Pep Rally on October 10. Families will then gather pledges for every lap your student runs (30-35 laps), and we’ll celebrate at the Fun Run on Friday, October 19. With our big goal of raising $30,000 for enrichment materials, we asked the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Fun Run and make it easier, more profitable, and more fun.

Students will also experience an amazing character theme, MINDSPARK MYSTERY LAB! Boosterthon’s most exciting theme yet combines S.T.E.A.M skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) with character-building. While they're teaming up with the MindSpark Kids to solve mysteries, our students will learn five 21st-century character traits that will help strengthen themselves and our world.

Donations will go toward enrichment materials to help current Buckalew students and to the entire two-week experience. Please help our school by reaching out to sponsors. 1. EASY for everyone! Sponsors only have to sit down once to pledge and pay while our school collects more funds!

2. Sponsors can either make a pledge per lap or a flat donation! If they make a pledge per lap, their credit card is charged after the Fun Run!

* Cash and check payments are still accepted. Must be turned in according to school policy. Your student will still get credit for the pledge or donation.

1 What is the Fun Run?

The Fun Run is a 9-day program and is this semester’s biggest fundraiser, taking place on October 19, 2018. Families will be getting pledges for the laps their student runs at the Fun Run. Funds raised from this event go toward enrichment programs for current Buckalew students!

2 How can parents register their student(s)?

First, parents log in or sign up on funrun.com. Then, parents can register their student as a participant on funrun.com by searching for the school by name. Students get a free prize just by being registered.

3 How can students get pledges?

Parents can help connect students to sponsors by sharing their pledge page on Facebook, through email, or even a text. Sponsors can enter and pay for those pledges online on your student’s page!

4 Will my student really run 30 laps? How big is the track?

Yes, even kindergarteners! The Fun Run track is about 1/16th of a mile, 1/4 the size of a normal high school track. The average student will run 30-35 laps and will have a goal to run at least 30 laps to help their school. The most any student will be counted for is 35 laps.

5 Can students receive a prize for flat donations?

Yes! All flat donations count toward pledges and are rounded by 30 (the average student will run over 30 laps). So, a $30 donation is the same as $1 per lap. A $60 donation is the same as $2 per lap, etc.

6 What if families don’t have Internet?

If a student’s family does not have Internet access, parents and families can use the pledgebook to record all pledges and send in the payment with the pledgebook. If students turn their pledge and payment into their teacher, please make sure student and class name are listed on the pledgebook.

7 Can sponsors pay for pledges online?

YES! Sponsors will be prompted to pay online for all pledges, even per lap pledges. Sponsors will receive an email after the run with the amount of their payment based on how many laps were run.

8 Can I make a pledge if I don’t want to pay online?

Yes. You can either turn in the payment for a pledge listed on the pledgebook, or you can request to turn off online payments for your account through our help desk on funrun.com.

9 Can I Write A Check?

For pledges not made on funrun.com, you can turn in cash or check.

Please make checks out to: Buckalew Elementary PTO and include your DOB and TXDL on your check.

Come help us decorate the sidewalks with inspirational sayings and uplifting greetings the evening before Walk to School Day. Then our kids will enjoy reading them as they walk to school THURSDAY OCTOBER 11. Buckets of chalk and copies of chalk art examples will be available at the front of the school. Pick up some of these supplies and head out towards any blank sidewalk or at your subdivision sidewalk.

Coats for Kids

Our annual Coats for Kids drive, sponsored by the CISD Police Department, is underway at Buckalew! Please consider donating your family's outgrown coats, jackets, or hoodies to other CISD families in need. Our donation bin is located in our front entrance. Thank you!

The Positivity Project Comes to Buckalew!

This year, Buckalew will be joining forces with The Positivity Project to teach our students such character traits as:

  • Teamwork
  • Perspective
  • Bravery
  • Gratitude

Each week, we will be recognizing students from every grade level who exhibit "Paws"itively Awesome Character! Each student is recognized on the announcements, they receive a certificate to take home, a "PAW" with their name on it displayed in the main hallway. Check out this week's winners!

It is time to begin our tin can collection! We will need soup cans from each family, labels removed and cleaned. Please place your cans into the large, labeled pot located in the school's front lobby. THANK YOU!

Improv Camp

The Woodlands High School Theater Department will be putting on an Improv Camp on Saturday, November 10th, and we wanted to know if this is an item that you might be able to put in a newsletter for your students? If this is something that you could do, here is the info:

Students will learn improv games and give a free performance for family and friends at noon.

GT NOMINATIONS FOR 2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR – Nominations are Due Wed. December 19

The window is now open for parent nominations for GT Screening and will continue through December 19. Parents may nominate their student for Spring GT Testing by completing the District Nomination Form, available through any 3rd and 4th grade teacher, or by asking Belinda in the front office. All second grade students will participate in the CogAT assessment in October. The CogAT assessment will serve as a GT screener for second grade students. Parents may now nominate, one time per level of test. In other words, students may test once each school year to see if they meet district requirements and /or qualify in other subject areas. GT testing will be held at Buckalew during the school day during the weeks of January 28 – February 1 and February 4-8. Nomination forms may be returned to your student’s 3rd and 4th grade teacher OR to Belinda in the front office. ALL NOMINATION forms are due NO LATER THAN December 19!


We are looking forward to seeing all of your great pictures that you took at Storybook Parade. We have two more picture worthy events coming up: Walk to School (October 11th) and Boosterthon (October 19th).

Some photo/uploading tips:

· When submitting pictures for our yearbook, we are looking for snapshots that were captured on our campus.

· For all events: due to limited space on the yearbook pages, 2-5 children per picture would be wonderful!

· Please upload pictures within 7 days of the event.

· You will be submitting your photos online via our private photo submission webpage.

Buckalew Visitors and Volunteers

Safety is our top concern, and surveillance cameras are placed at all doors and in the hallways of our school. Each camera records all activity. All outside doors are locked including the front doors. Please be sure to have your driver’s license with you during every visit to the campus.

Upon arrival, please see the receptionist for a visitor’s tag. The receptionist will ask for your driver’s license. It will be scanned using a system that is connected to the database that provides an alert of any person who may jeopardize the safety of our campus. If no such alert is discovered, the receptionist will then electronically permit entrance into the building.

Each time you enter the school, please remember to bring your license. The nametag given to you on each visit will show the date and the purpose of your visit. Please know that every visitor must have a name tag, and anyone without it will be stopped. Even though this is time consuming, it is essential to our children’s safety. For your child’s protection, parents and visitors are not allowed to go to their child’s classroom to pick him or her up during or at the end of the day. All check out is through the front office. Please allow students to walk to classrooms independently in the mornings and to go to the designated areas for dismissal in the afternoons.

If you need to pick up your student, you will be asked for your driver’s license. Students will only be released to parents with ID, unless we have written correspondence or an email to brobinson@conroeisd.net with identifying information on who will be picking up the student.

If you plan to be in the building during the school day at any time during the school year, please fill out the volunteer application on the CISD website: https://apps.conroeisd.net/volunteer/. This must be done yearly and will be necessary in order to volunteer in any position on campus.

Calling All Bears!! Big-Bear, Little-Bear Program

We are excited to start our new program for the 2018 - 19 school year called Big Bear/Little Bear. This program is for new families entering Buckalew to be placed with a veteran Buckalew family. If you are new to the area or new to Buckalew, please contact Mrs. Lozinak and she will connect you with a "Big Bear" family who will help you navigate for an easy family-friendly Buckalew start.

2018-19 School Calendar

For your planning purposes, download the pdf of next year's board approved school calendar below. Buckalew thanks you in advance for planning all vacations outside of the school calendar. As we know with absenteeism, students miss valuable instruction that takes place daily. What you may or may not know is that Texas schools are rated not only on academic performance, but also attendance. Daily attendance plays a huge role in our accountability rating from the state.

We appreciate your support of public education and the value of attendance. Because of YOU and our amazing staff, Buckalew continues to rank among the best in the state and we are very proud of that and want it to continue!


Parents just a reminder to send all transportation changes to school with your child in their backpack. E-mail changes are for emergency changes only and must be made before 2:00 p.m. Please note weather is not considered an emergency. For emergencies only, e-mail brobinson@conroeisd.net and make sure you get a confirmation that your change was received. Classroom teachers do not always check emails throughout the day or may even be absent and that request would not be received in time. If you have sent a note with your child it is not necessary to e-mail the note to the front office. Thank you.

Safety Reminders from our Police Department:

A few friendly reminders in regards to school zone safety:

  • Please remember to remind your children NOT to cross until the crossing guards are at their posts in the morning. The building is not open until 7:30.
  • Please remember if you are in your car, to wait for the crossing guards not only to cross the children, but for the crossing guards themselves to make it back to the sidewalk.
  • Please remember to stay off your cell phones when driving in school zones.
  • Please remember their are NO DOGS allowed on school property. This is for your personal liability and the safety of all of our students.
  • Please remember there are no U-Turns in front of the school.
  • Lakeside Park- if you are dropping your kids off or picking them up from Lakeside Park please park your vehicle to do so. It becomes a safety issue to just drive up and let your kids out or have them get in without parking. Please use our car line in the back of Buckalew if you want just drop off your child.

Did you know you can put limits on your child’s account? You can limit your child to one complete lunch so your child is getting the complete lunch on the menu.

Lost and Found

With the start of the school year, please make sure that all of your child’s supplies such as water bottles, lunch boxes, jackets, sweaters, etc. are labeled with their first and last name. If an item in Lost and Found is labeled, it will be returned to your child. All items not labeled or claimed every few months will be donated. ExxonMobil Grants

Calling all ExxonMobil employees, their spouses, children or retired employees.

You can help Buckalew Elementary receive a grant by doing what you love, volunteering. ExxonMobil Volunteer Involvement Program is a program that encourages its people to get involved within their community. It is as simple as doing what you are already doing, volunteering. By volunteering at our various school events (IE: Library, Carnival, workroom helper etc.) you can earn Buckalew a sizable grant. All we need is your 20 hours of individual or team (not to be combined) volunteer hours recorded. If you are interested in this program, please email Tracy Kumin at volunteers@buckalewbearspto.com

Box Tops- Final Week to turn in!

This will be the final week to turn in Box Tops for Education! All Box Tops must be turned into your child’s teacher by Monday, October 15th. Box Tops may be turned in by taping or glueing them onto the collection sheets that were sent home or you may send them in a clear plastic baggie. Even if your collection sheet is not full, please send them in!

The classrooms to collect the most box tops in each grade level will win a playground popsicle party! During this extra recess time our K,1st, and 2nd grader winners will have the opportunity to use the brand new 3rd and 4th grade playground equipment too!
