Math
We wrapped up and assessed our 2D and 3D shapes unit this week. Students are able to describe the shapes by various attributes such as flat, solid, curved sides, straight sides, corners, and faces. We practiced sorting shapes by these attributes and comparing the similarities and differences of shapes.
Phonemic Awareness
An important aspect of developing readiness for reading is understanding phonemic awareness. We have been working on some of these skills every day this year! These skills are things such as rhyming, identify the beginning sound and ending sound, segmenting and blend the syllables in words and counting the number of words in a sentence. All of these skills are completed auditorily and without letters or visuals in front of them. This helps students to gain a better awareness of language and to be better prepared to read after acquiring the letter sounds. Please practice some of these skills with your child! It is easy to do in the car or quickly before bed. You can name a word and ask your child to think of a word that rhymes. You can name three words (two that rhyme and one that does not) and have your child tell you the two words that rhyme. You can name objects that you see and ask your child to tell you the first (or last) sound they hear in the word.
Writing
We loved writing about our show and tell objects!! The first day we wrote a simple sentence, 'It is a ____.' and drew a picture of our object. Each day after we added a page to our book describing another aspect of our item. We wrote about the color, what it feels like, and what it can do. We will finish by putting together the pages of our book and read it to our classmates!
Reminders
SNOW!!! If there is snow we still have recess outside. If your child wishes to play in the snow they need to have snow boots, snow pants, and waterproof gloves. The students can play on the playground or bricks if they do not have snow pants and boots. Please remind your child that while throwing snowballs and eating snow may be okay at home it is not allowed here at school.
