Change in Last Minute Going Home Plans:
The office CAN NOT take changes over the phone. Plans need to be made before your student comes to school and a written note signed by the parent or guardian must be received.
To insure we are able to continue keeping all students safe during the going home process at the end of the day, teachers and the office need to know changes at the start of the day. If you are wanting your student to go home a different way or go to, we need this in writing. Phone calls cannot be accepted for this.
Calling classrooms to inform teachers of changes is too disruptive to the learning environment. Please help by sending a note with your student. This allows us to make the changes prior to the end of the day.
No Note = Your student going home on their normal scheduled plan.

A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL MYERS
Dear Husky Families,
First of all I would like to say thank you for sending your child to school ready to learn. It has been a pleasure watching them grow academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. They are growing so fast. I also want to express our gratitude for showing up for your parent teacher conference. 92% of our students had a conference. If you were not able to make your scheduled conference time, it’s not too late. Please contact your child's teacher to set one up.
Next week we will be beginning our Extended Day Enrichment activities. We will have invitational opportunities available before and after school. One of our staff members will be contacting you if your student will need to attend. Please work with us to make sure that your child is able to attend. These Enrichment activities are aimed to fill in a skill that your child is missing. By working together we will be able to help your child grow academically at a much faster pace.
Can’t believe that November is already here. The trees have already turned colors and many of them have already fallen to the ground. That tells me that winter weather is just around the corner. We will still be having outdoor recess as the weather gets colder. Please make sure that your child comes to school dressed for the weather.
November is also the time in which we think about all of the things that we are thankful for. I want to share one of the things that is on top of my list. I am very thankful to be the Principal at Washington, I am working daily with an amazing staff and a bunch of amazing families. I hope that you are able to share with someone the things that you are thankful for.
I will be hosting, “Coffee with the Principal”, on November 19th at 9:00 am. Hope to see you there!

MR. D'S COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Mr. D's Counseling Newsletter for NOVEMBER
This month of NOVEMBER at Washington Elementary we are focused on being Self-Managers.
Self-Management is the ability to regulate our emotions, thoughts and behaviors so that we can be in control of our actions and can make positive choices that benefit ourselves and others.
To be successful, kids need to learn from their experiences and develop self-discipline, which will help them keep their impulses and feelings from controlling them. Practicing Self-Management is a practical skill that gives kids real benefits in their lives and being able to get along with others.
As mentioned before, being an example to kids by modeling the behaviors we want to see is perhaps the best way to teach.
And so as a parent or guardian some areas to discuss with your student modeling Self-Management are:
Talk with your child about the areas of your life where you demonstrate being a Self-Manager.
Don’t be afraid to admit to your child when you are not a Self-Manager.
Challenge yourself and your child to be more of a Self-Manager in areas where it may be hard.
Lastly, taking time each day to reflect upon moments where we were or were not our best selves can be so beneficial in helping kids grow as well as with our own selves in working to be better humans. Talk with your kids and let them know nobody is perfect, but that if we keep working at it we can keep learning, growing and getting better! :)
If parents have questions or would like help with these or other topics please contact Mr. Mario De Ieso, School Counselor.

VPS Nutrition Services
Families should still complete Meal Applications, even though school meals will be available at no cost this school year. As you know, so many other federal/state/local programs use free/reduced-price status as qualifiers. Every eligible Meals Application that is not submitted means lost resources for our schools and our families.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS
We want to see your child all day, every day that school is in session. At our school, learning begins as soon as the bell rings and continues throughout the entire day. That’s why it’s important for students to arrive on time. All students should be at school no later than 8:20 a.m., so that he or she has enough time to store their belongings, settle in and start learning when school begins promptly at 8:30 a.m.
Students who arrive after 8:30 am will be considered tardy and must check in at the school office with a parent or guardian to obtain a tardy pass. A student arriving 30 minutes or later after the bell rings will be considered absent for that period.
Parents and families can make a difference in school attendance. Establishing a routine is key to getting to school on time and ensuring good attendance.
Schools can help students and families who are unable to get to class on time or attend regularly. Contact the school office or a Family Community Resource Center coordinator for more information.

VPS Fall Panorama SEL Well-Being Survey Window- Nov. 8-23
We are asking that all of our students in grades 3-12 participate in a survey that will provide invaluable insights into their experiences and how we can improve and adapt our district to their needs. The responses to these surveys will be used by building staff to provide building-wide, small group, and one-on-one supports for students. We are partnering with a third-party vendor, Panorama, to support us in administering these surveys. For Panorama FAQs, visit this link: FAQs | Panorama Education . To see VPS FAQs click this link: Survey FAQs.
The survey content will ask students to self-reflect on

Supportive relationships
Sense of belonging
FREE WINTER AFTER SCHOOL SCHOOL DANCE PROGRAM
The program is open to students in grades 3-8. Classes are one hour, once a week. Students should wear comfortable clothing that allows them to move freely. Special dance shoes are not necessary, but students may wear them if they wish.
Each session lasts eight weeks, so students receive eight hours of extracurricular dance education. During the program students hone their technical and creative skills as dancers. Students in the program are able to learn specific styles of dance. Not only do students get to explore the technique of dance, but they also have the opportunity to create dances with other students. Students are encouraged to collaborate while exploring and choreographing based on various stimuli. It is an amazing experience for students to work with students from other schools who share their love for dance. At the end of the sessions the students have a chance to show their families what they learned and perform to a real audience.
