FMS Counseling: Mrs. Burfield, Mrs. Horstmeier & Ms. Jo
Emotions in the Middle: Moody, private, self conscious... if this sounds like your tween, you're not alone. At this age, his or her body and emotions are changing rapidly. Here are ways to help him/her cope.
Managing moods: Physical growth and worries about friends, sports, and schoolwork can cause moodiness. Let your child know you're available to talk. A quiet statement, such as "I remember what it feels like not to be asked to join a team." can invite him/her to open up about whats bothering him/her.
Finding privacy: It's natural for your middle graders to want some time to him/herself. He/she might close his/her bedroom door or walk outside to take a phone call, for example. Shoe him/her that you respect his/her growing need for privacy by giving space.
Fitting in: Many middle graders feel self-conscious. Being part of a group of people who share his/her interests can help your youngster focus on his/her strengths and fell more confident. Encourage him/ her to participate in at least one activity at school. A group, club or sport.
FMS Counseling has a new look and location: We have a couple locations in the building this year. Mrs. Burfield and Mrs. Horstmeier are on the second floor in their office and a calm room next door for students that may need a break. See pics below. Ms. Jo is located in the main office. We look forward to a great year here at FMS!
Needing to see the school counselor?
Students needing to access the counselor's office can submit a form from their chrome books by clicking on the apps button. This form comes only to the counselor's. 6th graders will learn how to use this app on Tuesday, August 27th when counselors meet with them through their ELA classrooms. You can also ask your teacher for help. If you can't locate the form you can also shoot your school counselor an email. Obviously if there is an emergency, students will be sent to the Counselors Office immediately. This is just a great way to help students stay in the classroom for instruction time .
Here are a few ways you can reach out to us in the FMS Counseling Office:
Mrs. Horstmeier works with students with a last name starting with an A-J and can be reached at shorstmeier@fulton58.org and Mrs. Burfield works with students with a last name starting with a K-Z and can be reached at cburfield@fulton58.org.
Ms. Jo is the Counseling Office secretary and can be reached at jwilliamson@fulton58.org.
Counseling Office phone number is 573-590-8208

WOW! Just like that we have been in school for 3 days!
FMS Vocal music classes are off to a tremendous start! With many new faces, and new groups, we have been getting acquainted this week.
Music 6, Choir, and Arts Alive classes worked on a Google Slides project called "This Is Us." This project provided students the opportunity to set goals for this year, and to tell us more about themselves. Please ask your student to share their Slide with you!
Music 6: Next week we will begin working on singing skills, and figure out what we remember about rhythm! We will do group singing activities, learn the "Cups" song, and review rhythm terminology.
Arts Alive: Next week we will prepare our music folders for 1st semester, receive the music for our SHOW CHOIR CONCERT (11/20/19), and do LOTS of singing!
Choir: Next week we will receive our music folders and our first piece of concert repertoire. We will also focus on assigning voice parts, and singing with pure tone and vowels. This group is sounding AWESOME already!
If you want to join after school choir, please come see me, students, for a sign up sheet! Check out the rehearsal schedule on the picture below!
Please feel free to contact me at any time: bmoebes@fulton58.org. For pictures and daily updates about Vocal Music at FMS, follow me on Twitter: @MoebesMusic

Next week we will be introduction theory concepts with 6th grade. We will continue refining musical concepts in 7th grade and we may also get to concert band music. 8th grade band will be working on marching band and will be heading outside soon. We will be sending more information home soon. 8th grade guitar will begin exploring musical notation and 7th grade will begin work with chords and progressions.
Please consider following me on Twitter @MrT_FPSBands. I will be providing a daily playlist which your students will hear when they enter the room. You may also email me at chthomas@fulton58.org.

News from the Art Room
Hello! I am deeply sorry I have to be out the first few weeks of school due to illness. I am however very excited to start the year, and will be back as soon as I am fit for duty.
I look forward to seeing a bunch of new faces with our new sixth grade group, as I am equally looking forward to our returning seventh, and eighth graders!
Upon my return we will no doubt find our cadence, and fall right back into our routines, much like last year, with a few new changes to classroom flow.
For the first two weeks of school, I will have a substitute, and have projects lined up for all grades to get started on. They will be instructed, and informed of classroom procedures and rules, but I will go into more detail with them upon my return.
If you have any questions now, or in the future, don’t hesitate in dropping me an email cchapman@fulton58.org or contact Mrs Houf, or Ms Hogan through the main office if you are in need of immediate assistance.
I should be returning after Labor Day, so my hope is to only be out one full week. I assure you this will not be a problem, and we will reset, get acquainted, and hit the ground running. I look forward to diving into many projects this year and to begin our journey together!
Thank you,
Mr Chapman

The FMS Thrive Hive
The Fulton Middle School Thrive Hive opened for business on Monday, August 21st. The store is open 7:25 to 7:45 each morning. If students aren't able to shop then they can email Mrs. Horstmeier @ shortmeier@fulton58.org or Mrs. Yates @ hyates@fulton58.org for an appointment to shop.
The Thrive Hive is designed to allow students to use their Hornet Bucks--earned through the Positive Behavior Support Program--to purchase items from the store. The Thrive Hive was created to help the needs of the FMS Student Community.
Items currently needed for the store are:
Any age appropriate toys, DVD's for the holidays.
As we gear up for winter: Hats, gloves, scarves, and coats.
Snack items: Nutella snack packs, Slim jims and pop tarts.
Other needs are ear buds and water bottles.
We will be gearing up for the holiday season so baskets to make gift packages for students to purchase would be great.
All other items are appreciated as well.
If you would like to donate, please call Fulton Middle School at 573-590-8200.
