Spotlight on Education: Special Areas - Music and Library
Music
This year in Music we have had to roll (literally on a cart!) with various Covid restrictions such as not singing indoors and not sharing instruments. We’ve taken this opportunity to meet our Music standard domains (Perform, Create, Respond, Connect) by doing movement activities, reading and performing rhythms, playing virtual instruments, singing (in-person students were able to have music outside so they could sing safely while social distancing), writing songs, composing melodies, drawing to music (especially the beautiful music of the Romantic period), and learning all about music history!
This past month we celebrated Black History Month by focusing on some famous black musicians and learning about styles like Blues and Jazz. We listened to B.B. King sing “The One Shoe Blues” and the students wrote their own Blues songs about sad or tough times to match the Blues song form. Right now we are learning about different styles of Jazz and are practicing “improvising” (a Jazz feature and important music education standard) body percussion movements to a piece of Jazz music.
Although this year has been different, it has been an exciting opportunity to explore new aspects of music and have a great time being creative with music learning! We have all been having a blast!
Library
During Library classes, fifth-grade students are completing essays on various space topics they chose to research. Third and fourth-grade students are digitally sampling books on the 20-21 Volunteer State Book Award nominees list. Students that read or listen to at least 3 books from the list will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite VSBA book.
FIS PTA Grounds Clean Up Day - March 20th
- FIS PTA is hosting our next Grounds Clean Up Day on Saturday, March 20th from 9am-12pm. We could really use volunteers to help us make our school look beautiful. We will be picking up trash, weeding, planting flowers & trimming shrubs. Volunteers are welcome to come as a family or alone and stay as long as they can. We will provide trash bags, refreshments, hand sanitizer and gloves, but please bring your own gardening tools if you have them. Contact grounds@fispta.org for questions.
Spring Gifts
- Help raise money for FIS while getting some great Spring gifts for yourself, teachers and friends!!! On Monday, March 8th, from 4pm-7pm, FIS will get 10% of the profits from Buff City Soap!! NO flyer required, so head to either of their locations – Turkey Creek @ 11277 Parkside Drive or Powell @ 6631 Clinton Hwy.
Thank you to local churches!
Also, we'd like to thank Shoreline Church for providing a special treat for our staff this past Friday. The individual bundt cakes were delicious!
Thank you so much for your support!
