Memory Book Assignment!

Memory Book


In effort to know you better, put your writing and creativity to the test, and create a product you will be proud of we want you to write a memory book. It will be the memories you’ve made over the course of your life. It will be due March 24th, but you must begin now in order to complete it on time without rushing!

The final product will be presented to me in a loose-leaf, snap-ring binder or a scrapbook if you choose. Your binder may have drawings or pictures pasted on the outside cover, inside cover and the spine if you wish to. If you choose to put pictures inside to correlate with your chapters then I would suggest you buy acid-free paper. This is your opportunity to be creative – share fun stories, include poems, pictures! Be extraordinary!


Your Memory Book must include the following 13 chapters. Use the titles as the main idea of that chapter and write on some of the suggestions given in parenthesis. You may write in a humorous or serious genre, but be sure to make it informative and enjoyable to read (something you’d like to share – I promise you will want to).


Title Create a title that reflects you in 3 words or less.


Chapter 1: “Who Am I?” (Who are you? Where do you live?

Something interesting about you most people

don’t know. Include your wordle.)


Chapter 2: “Compared with most families, mine…” (your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, older cousins and siblings and anybody who may not be a relative, but who has been a great part of your life and your family’s; include a family tree)


Chapter 3: “And Then There Was Me” (Earliest memories:

people, places, events, all those cute things that

your mom told you about. You could also include

your “used to thinks”. For example when you

used to think that the middle lane was for

motorcycles only. )


Chapter 4: “I Grew Up Here” (Describe your town,

neighborhood, rural community, etc.)


Chapter 5: “School Bells” (Your earliest years in school –

K – 3rd – learning to read, special school

programs, special teachers and friends, getting

accustomed to school.)


Chapter 6: “More School Bells” (Grades 4 - 6 - teachers, favorite/ least favorite subject,

friends, activities, successes, heartbreaks, most

embarrassing moment)


Chapter 7: “My First Love” (This is a love or passion for a sport, hobbie, activity, a cause, etc. Be creative and share something you have a love for that reflects who you are)


Chapter 8: “I Wish I Could See ____ Again” (Tell

about a childhood friend that you have no

contact with anymore, but would like to see

again.)


Chapter 9: “Let’s Go to the Movies” (Favorite movies at

different times in your life: early childhood

versus now.)


Chapter 10: “Let’s Take a Vacation” (A memorable trip

you took with family or friends or a trip you

would like to take.)


Chapter 11: “You’ve made a difference.”

The most influential person in your life (be sure to explain why) or your own idea.


Chapter 12: “The Future’s So Bright” (Goals? Aspirations?

What are your life goals? What are your

predictions for this year? How do you expect to reach these goals? What would you like to change? Why?

Explain. As you think back on your life, describe

how the seemingly “bad” things that have

happened have created good – for example, in lessons learned or in experiences that prepared you for a future event.)


Epilogue: “Reflections” Congratulations, look what I completed

with my Memory Book! What do I like best about

my book? What would I have done differently?

What chapter would be a good addition for me?




MEMORY BOOK GRADE SHEET


If your Memory Book is complete and shows some effort, thought and creativity, your grade will be no less than an 80. The more thorough and the more creative you are in decorating your book and pages and sections with drawings, pictures, photographs, stuff cut out of magazines or newspapers or brochures, the higher the grade will be. Any book that does not contain all chapters will receive a lower grade, regardless of how nice it looks. Any book that is a bunch of “junk” will not receive a grade.

Cold Weather and Recess!

Parents please note that 6th grade will be going outside during the winter if the temperature is above 32 degrees. This means that students will need to bring their jackets, hats, gloves and scarves everyday with them. Students should also be dressing appropriately for winter. Unfortunately the 6th grade rooms are not very predictable with the temperature. One day it may be very cold and the next day extremely warm. Layers are the best options at this time.

Inclement Weather Information!

DURING EXTREMELY BAD WEATHER, IT MAY BECOME NECESSARY TO CLOSE SCHOOL.

Follow these suggestions:


1. Connect messages will be sent to your primary phone number.

2. Watch T.V., listen to the radio and/or check the Catawba County web page:

www. catawbaschools.net

3. Announcements will be made in late evening or early morning.

4. Delayed openings are used when warmer weather is predicted.

5. No announcement means school as usual.

6. The school will follow the instructions provided by parents on the inclement weather sheet for your child’s transportation.


THERE WILL BE NO AFTER-SCHOOL CARE ON DAYS WHEN SCHOOL IS DISMISSED FOR BAD WEATHER. If the school has not received special instructions from you, the child will be dismissed as usual (car or bus). We do not have phone lines to support individual calls so parents must make plans other than to be called. If your plans change during the year, please let the homeroom teacher know as soon as possible.

New Homework Policy Starting January 21, 2016

Sixth Grade New Homework Policy

We are half way through sixth grade, part of our job is to prepare and transition students to the middle school. As a result, we have collaborated to create a consistent policy concerning homework.

This policy does not apply to special projects that may be assigned by teachers in any given class. If a project is assigned a note requiring a parent signature will be sent home.

  1. This policy starts over every nine week grading period.
  2. Each student will have the following number of homework passes to use during a nine week grading period:
    • 3 passes for math class
    • 3 passes for language arts class
    • 1 passes for content area classes (i.e.: science and social studies)
  3. In order to use a homework pass, the work assigned must be completed and turned in the next day. After that the assignment will be counted as a zero. A homework pass is not a “free pass” from doing the work. The pass simply allows the student to turn the work late and still get credit. For google classroom assignments the homework pass must be submitted to the teacher with the assignment written on the homework pass. Again the homework pass is due the next day or the assignment will remain a zero.
  4. A student may use one homework pass per assignment. For example the student may not use more than one homework pass on clipboard math for the week. They cannot use 2 homework passes to extend their turn in day for 2 days.
  5. If a student uses all homework passes in a nine week grading period, all late work after that is counted as a zero.
  6. If, at the end of the nine week grading period, a student has no zeros on homework and still has unused homework passes, that student may turn those passes in for a for extra credit.
  7. Please be aware that if a student loses a homework pass, no replacements will be given out. Students should take great care in ensuring that passes are secure at all times.
  8. Students will have one make-up day for each consecutive day they are absent. Students must make up all work missed if they are to receive credit. (example: two consecutive days absent=two days to make up the work). Homework passes do not need to be used to turn this work in.
